Trailer Floor Oil

What is it that is best to put on the wood floor of a trailer as far as oil or sealant. Not really keen on using used motor oil, but what would be a good sealant and protectant? Thanks - Bob

Really used motor oil from a non fuel injected gas engine.
Good ad dirty with lots of carbon and unburnt gas etc.

Then cover with a black plastic visqueen to keep the rain off while the sun cooks it into the wood good. The longer the better.

I put used transmission oil on my trailer wood floor. 2 years later 2 deck boards needed replaced. I think the oil help seal in the water and boards rotted faster..
Menards sells the old CCA wood, special order from a company menards owns..
I used a 8 ft and a 12 ft CCA 2x6 to make the repair. Only thing I could get. $32 with tax for 8 and 12 ft 2x6 boards..

I think keeping the trailer in full sun may be better.

I had a tenant put large flower pots on the wood deck. The flower pots trapped water. Under the flower pots the wood rotted. You could step through the wood. The rest of the wood was good..

I made a mistake by putting shingles on steps for an elderly man so he wouldn't slip.

In one year I was replacing the steps. In my opinion trapping water causes today's treated lumber to rot..Keep it dry and in the full sun..

Just my opinion. Others are welcome to theirs..

Only two of my trailer deck boards needed replaced. My trailer is 11 years old..

Any kind of repurposed oil is going to be terribly slick, especially when it is wet.

One trip to the ER will buy a lot of boards!

I would go with the boiled linseed oil or paint. Or just use treated lumber and leave it as is.

I tried the used oil / bake in the sun deal. Just made a mess with dirt sticking to the oil that was supposed to be down in the wood deck. Finally took a pressure washer and turned the black deck into a like new clean wood deck. Used Sherwin Williams clear SuperDeck sealer.

Used motor oil is as good as it gets. Put the oil in a 5 gallon bucket, and use your wife's best broom to spread it around. Actually, a worn out old shop broom works even better.

I buy mistake gallons of deck seal from the local hardware store. Wrong color, etc for the buyer. Price varies, but usually around $10 a gallon. Put a coat on every year at that price. Colors are sometimes wonky, but a gallon will usually cover my 16' trailer twice.
