Hi all,

I just purchased my first tractor. It's a John Deer 401C diesel. I am hoping you guy's or gals can help tell what engine I have and what year this tractor is based on the numbers if have. The tractor tag numbers are Tractor numbers
401CD
305275T, and the engine numbers are Type 4219DT 05
Serial 467670T. The tractor does not run unless you spray starter fluid manually. Previous owner says the injection pump is bad. Previous owner provided 4 new injectors. I am good at wrenching on gas motors, but know very little about the diesel engine. My plan is to do all the repairs myself. In order to get the right parts, in really need to know my exact model, year etc. I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks!

Hello limitless welcome to YT! Your engine is pretty simple the number tells you what it is 4 cylinder 219CID Diesel. I will let the other experts give you a rundown on the year. Here is a link to some more info on it on Tractordata.com. Looks like a nice one. You must live right to be able to post those pictures on you first post, usually there is a block until you have 5 posts. Looks like a nice clean machine.

Thanks for the engine info, now I can purchase the oil filter, diesel fuel filter, hydrolic filter, air filter etc. I already removed the injection pump, and will be disassembling it. I would like to simply exchange it for a rebuilt unit, but they are very expensive..

You may want to consider sending your injection pump to one of the fellows that post on this site (Dieseltech or Al "the pumpman" Baker). One mistake can cost you way more than you save, and they are equipped to properly test and calibrate it. If you decide to do it yourself you need to get the proper manual for the pump, if you don't have it, before starting.

As for the serial number 305275, I would say it is 1978-1979 vintage. Lists of the industrial serial numbers aren't published like the Ag tractors. Someone may have an industrial, construction, forestry serial number book and give the exact year, otherwise you will need to have your JD construction equipment dealer get it for you. The parts catalog uses serial number, not the year, to designate part changes during the production run.

You should get the John Deere Operator's and Technical (service) Manuals for it as well. You can get a printed copy of the parts catalog or you can use the online one and print off the pages you need. Here is a link to the 401C Parts Catalog;

On that tractor take a close look at the front bolster,(casting)where it bolts to the engine block. They're a pretty powerful tractor for it's size and with the front shovel they were notorious for the engine-bolster bolts loosening up.Just keep them tight.I replaced a few of them in the late 70's-early 80's at the dealership.

If you don't have the means to calibrate it, you can do a lot more damage than you want (or can afford).
A pump is a very complex piece of equipment that needs someone who is familiar with them. Beware trying to do it yourself.

I have a JD 401B probably similar year. I use mine to pull my flail mower. It gets a good work out this time of the year, cutting weeds for fire control. The blue Pacific Ocean in the back ground Stan

Jim.ME,

I will take your advice and get in
contact with the injection pump
experts on this board. I have read
on the internet how difficult it
is to rebuild these units.

I don't surf. In school I had to make a decision. Motorcycles or surf boards. I picked motorcycles. Stan

Jim.ME,

I was able to find All the pumpman by goggling, but had no luck finding Dieseltech. I'm trying to figure out how to find members on this site. I'm hopeing dieseltech is closer to California.
