Oil sample came back severe critical at 1127 hours on my work backhoe.oil is changed every 300 hrs.I got the machine at 400 hours so idk if it was run low on oil,had metal particles left over from manufacture or what.an earlier sample showed some signs of metal in the oil but not severe.at that point (425hours)I would take it out of service if it were mine but BNSF will probably have me run it till it blows

That's strange how they'll take the time to sample the oil but then not take recommended steps to prevent a catastrophic breakdown. That's defeating the whole purpose of sampling, not to mention a big waste of money

rrman61,

A drastic change in the oil sample may just be a bad sample. Yes you SHOULD remove it out of service.

Sample should be taken through the dipstick, and NOT From THE Bottom of the pan
NOT the oil filter, or from the oil pan drain hole,

Guido.

I agree after I posted I found out supposedly the
guidelines werent followed so its not considered a
good sample.years ago I was running a piece of
railroad equipment with a 353 Detroit which would
miss at first startup for about 10 minutes.the company
said to watch it.so after repeated alerts from me I
watched it throw a rod destroying the block a few weeks later
