Baking soda is the best I have seen.

Keeping electrolyte off is the best prevention.
Using sealed batteries or AGM batteries helps.
If the battery has caps and is refillable, keep the level just high enough to keep the plates wet. Trying to keep one full to the rings is a losing proposition on an off road application.
If there is room, and rarely will there be, a plastic marine box works well.
