JD 2210 PTO issue

Hello,

I have a JD 2210 with only 400 hours. Issue Im having is the PTO engages fine but when I disengage PTO it comes to abrupt sudden stop instead of a normal spin stop. This sudden stop either throws belt off or one of the mower blades spins off.
Any help is appreciated.

I recommend a different forum called Green Tractor Talk. It mostly revolves around compact tractors like yours. You'll probably have better chances of someone there having an answer for you.

If the compacts are like the newer ag tractors that is normal. My 7600 and 8120 both have the fast stop. The 4430 and 4440, I think, are supposed to but if you hold the lever you can get the coasting stop. Btw, the newer tractors are electric switches for the PTO. Not mechanical linkages like the older machines.

When you engage the PTO, transmission oil pressure engages a "wet clutch pack" AND the same oil pressure on a spring-loaded piston overcomes the spring and pulls the PTO brake away from the drum.

When you switch the PTO "off" the clutch pack releases AND spring pressure forces the PTO brake shoe against the drum.

For safety reasons, they want the PTO to stop QUICKLY.

If it's stopping even MORE quickly than normal, something may be wrong or worn in the PTO brake are making the brake grab more suddenly than it's supposed to.

Key #1 is the PTO brake shoe, springs #7, #8 and #9 apply the brake when oil pressure against piston ahead of springs is removed.
