I took this picture to remind me why I havent any money

I hire the Co-op to apply the fertilizer on the last of my
corn ground with this air flow thing. I doesnt really
cost all that much to have it applied, but the cost of
the fertilizer leaves me speechless. They were less
than a hour doing 60 acres, including refills. GPS
guidance, so no wasteful overlap, and no places
without fertilizer either. As of today I am done burying
money for this spring.

We do it exactly like that here in Central Siberia. The Co-op I use just bought new John Deere spreaders. They said they had a lot of problems with the yellow ones. I have soil tests done on 2&1/2 acre grids that are then used by an agronomist to come up with recipes for the various fields associated with the appropriate grids. The nurse trucks came out with 3 different mixes in separate bins. The spreader then adjusts its speed to deliver the correct amount of fertilizer to each field. Thanx for posting that picture . It's remarkable. That picture could have been anywhere around here.

There are some that are creating yield maps, when harvesting crops. Then use the yield maps, in conjunction with soil test , and the fertilizer spreader applies fertilizer at a variable rate as it crosses the field based on map and test results. The hope is of course to apply exactly the correct amount of fertilizer needed in various places on the field.

They do that here with lime also and soil samples. Not cheap but it probably pays for itself in increased yields and saved product.

It sure has come a long way! What amazes me is the vast amount of farming that goes on in such northern areas! Its a disease that runs in our blood! It can be such a battle but so satisfying to ourselves!

Might want to check around. CN just dumped 47 cars of fertilizer. May be some fer perty cheep......

What's "overlap?" I sprayed burn-down on a hay field and it has tiger stripes of green all across it. Old school with a Farmall H and trailer sprayer.

Apparently I'm pretty good at driving parallel lines but horrible at judging 30'.

I really recommend looking up agphd on u tube. I started listening to their shows and attended a seminar they put on. I took their advice and did one acre soil samples this year for lime and fertilizer. It was shocking to see the difference in results. Some acres were 5ph and others 7+ph. It was interesting to see the changes in organic matter and cation exchange capacity through my fields. What I spent on soil samples I nearly already saved in not applying lime where it wasn't needed and not over applying fertilizer where the soil could not hold it. I only put up hay but so far my fields have never looked better and it's piece of mind knowing I'm not putting out more or less than the soil can handle.

Some things it just makes more sense to hire it out to some one with right equipment. Many years ago my brother build his own 3pt. sprayer. Ugly contraption but it worked great. Then one year the local co-op sprayed one of his fields by mistake. When they figured it out they asked him if he wouldn't mind reimbursing them just the cost of the chemicals. He said yes if they'd come back and spray his other fields too. He hasn't used that home built sprayer since. He works a full time job in the city, and to him it's one less hassle to worry about.
