Too Much Tractor???

I hooked my new Oliver 1850 to my John Deere 42 pull type combine. I broke the yoke on one of the universal joints and can't find a replacement. Maybe the Oliver was too powerful and broke the yoke - - maybe there was a rock in it - - I dunno what happened. If you have any ideas, please look at the combines forum. Thanks, kelly

Im familiar with the tractor, but not the combine. Does the combine have some sort of slip clutch or shear bolts in case it gets jammed up ? I would have to think so. Like a baler, brush cutter, corn picker ect. If working right it may have saved the yoke. Yoke maybe was weak or near failure to begin with. Ive had issues with pto shafts, yokes, and i joints on stuff weve bought in the past. Basically I believe you could hook a 200 hp. tractor to that combine. It should have a device built into it to prevent damage if plugged or some other problems happen. That part gives saving the rest of the driveline. Say it was hooked to a smaller tractor and there was no give if it did plug or jam. Maybe the yoke wouldnt have broken, maybe something in the tractor would have. We also have had yokes fail due to bad u joints we didnt catch quick enough. Lots of factors.

Take the shaft to a local welding shop. They can likely replace it and the cost may be a surprise to you. Lot cheaper than many parts....

"Maybe the Oliver was too powerful..." Don't be silly.

Unless you pulled the throttle wide open and "dumped" the PTO clutch (i.e. you didn't feather the PTO to start the machine), or tried to push the machine beyond its capacity (i.e. you drove too fast and tried to push too much material through because the tractor was not lugging down like a smaller one would), it has nothing to do with the power of the tractor.

We're talking late 1950's here right? Combine is 70+ years old right? Probably slap wore out, but even if it isn't it's no spring chicken. That has a lot more to do with the yoke breaking than anything.

Does the yoke come off the shaft or is it welded? If it comes off you've got options, possibly as close as your local Tractor Supply. Just get a pair of modern yokes to fit the shafts and the matching cross (probably a Weasler "6-series") and you'll be back in business.

There is a place in Waite Park MN called Minnesota Driveline that can repair just about anything with a U-joint in it. They used to repair and balance driveshafts for the paper mill.
