What's the name of the belt used in variable speed trans

I have a very very old MTD mower that uses two belts and a variable speed pulley.
One belt is a common size that I can buy off Amazon or Lowes.
The primary belt I can't locate.
It's 5/8 x 53 inches. What is the proper name for this type of belt? It's like a V-belt, just thinner. Belt similar to this is used on go carts.

Do you know a place online that I can find a kevlar belt that size?

Thanks
Geo

Your belt is Width: 3/8 (0.375), Length: 36
Yes there are many MTD belts. However I can't find one that is
5/8 inches wide and 53 inches long..
thanks

would call that a 5L530K fractional horsepower belt, but that's just me. (The WFM guys lose their minds when I post that kind of stuff.)

What's the model number? Try entering it at www.searsparts.com. If you get lucky and it comes up you will have part numbers to search by. Which brings up the question, are there no part numbers on the old belts? Also, belts used for this type of service are sometimes called ''raw-edged belts''.

5L530W is a kevlar belt. Works on all Salisbury drive setup. Variable width torque converter.

I buy all my belts from surplus center. I always buy a spare at the same time. One time I bought one of those expensive belts from tractor supply and it didn't last any longer than a regular belt!

We buy belts from V-belt supply online, had good luck. We had a Craftsman lawn tractor with that vari- drive, worked well, never changed any belts.

The belt itself has no particular name as far as I know. But the name of the system is called a variator, if thats what youre asking. A Salisbury clutch bears no resemblance , a completely different system. It is dependent on engine rpm to engage, whereas a variator can be used at any engine rpm.

Forgot to mention places like C.J. Edwards, Applied Industrial Technologies, Cleveland Oak Belting or Baum Hydraulics all have a large selection of belts.

On a go cart it's called a "torque converter" or CVT.

Why do you make it difficult, though? Knowing some specific generic term for the belt won't help you get the right one. Knowing the make and model of the machine will.

Possibly a - tight radius- belt? The deep vee notched belts also were used in such applications as a small alternator pulley. There would not be such a tight turn on a variator system. Also need to take into consideration that old as the machine is, may have had the wrong belt installed in the past.
