John Deere 40s with reverser transmission

I purchased a 1953 John Deere 40s with a reverser transmission. serial # 62627. Can anyone tell me how many of these came off assembly line with that transmission add on. Its kinda cool...would love to know more? John 406-369-6930 in Montana

I'm no Dubuque expert, but I'm guessing none did? I'm wondering if it was put in from a 420 or 430?

My grandfather has a 40s with power steering. The dealer equipped it with parts from a 420.

Don't think there is a break down on the reversers. There were 12483 standards made though. Couldn't find a reverser for the 40 in the parts book. I think they came
out later for the 420-430's like after 100000 serial number according to the parts book. Yours could be a hybred.

That reverser unit in the 420 was kind of a tender unit.Use it carefully,don't just throw that long lever back and forth,and don't pop the clutch.If I remember right that unit was no bigger than a grapefruit,or maybe a cantaloupe. The deere dealer I worked for in the late 70's stocked all the parts for them,and kept a basket of the different parts for the customers,almost like a rebuild kit.When he sold one of those old tractors with that unit he would recommend that the buyer put it in one position and just use the regular transmission lever.I had one that had worked in the woods for nearly 50 years and was never taken apart.People used to say he operated like an old woman.

The 40 never had the reverser. Im guessing the OPs tractor is a Frankenstein tractor or misidentified.

Thank You for all responses...maybe it's Dlr installed? sure wish it had power steering as well
