need to rebuild the sliding doors on the machine shed. they are wood and are very soft and are getting rotten

thinking of a wood frame with steel siding/roofing. was looking for design ideas on the frame before i get too far along. any pictures would be great

Thanks.

Look at some pole building building manufacturers literature to see how they build their doors. They are usually very efficient with materials.

Lester, Morton, etc.

My sliding doors are made with the aluminum channels from the pole barn supplier. Available in up to 16 foot lengths at that time. The accommodate 2x4 horizontal girts and where the two doors meet one is female the other male. Works great

Not going back with a solid wood panel design, you might want to look at some modern doors. You can either buy new, or duplicate the design of a new style, by building your own.

If you were having any trouble with your track and rollers, I'd consider completely re-doing that as well, or perhaps just buying new track and rollers as well.
No need to have a new door, and still be fighting the rollers and track. Hanging up, door detaching itself from it, or track detaching itself from the building, etc.

at this point the rollers seem ok just where they attach to the door the wood is shot. but new tracks isn't a bad idea.

i'm thinking steel doors on a light wood frame will probably weigh 1/4 of the old doors

thanks.

Mine is designed as a 10x10 slider. I kept an eye on Clist, and found five 2 inch aluminum clad insulated panels, 2' x 10' from a used overhead door. They are solid core insulation. I welded 5 of them together, top and bottom (they have riveted galvanized on each end), and am in the process of attaching a light gauge steel channel to the top to attach my rollers. Well insulated, and weather proof panel. steve

his is the way to go.

Look up plyco. They have the channels and struts that you need.
They sell to lumberyards,
Some lumberyards will have similar parts from
Old National, now Stanley hardware.

When I built my barn I used the aluminum channels like Redtom described, with 2x4 slid in and the same steel as I used for the siding. 12x12 doors and they have worked out well for me.
