6 volt AGM Optima batt?

I keep only one 6 volt battery on hand and swap it from a few different tractors. I do this for two reasons: I'm frugal and the ones I get are 3 year and typically last exactly that, 3 years. I just sold one of my collection and so went my 6 volt. I am contemplating a 6v Optima, pricey, but will it last longer and stay up better? Any of you guys using the AGM batteries?

I've used a lot of AGM batteries and like them. I like the fact I don't have to worry with checking or adding water and I've had good luck with them YET THEY COST MORE. Others prefer conventional wet flooded lead acid which is fine, to each their own for whatever THEIR reasons, budget and needs.

Due to the normally short life of the lead acid 6 volt batteries, I went to the Optima on two of my tractors, one of which is a 1951 JD AR which is 12 volt but uses two batteries which are separated so I use two 6 volts. I really like them. I just fired up one of the tractors which is 6 volt and had been sitting in the shed for about eight months since last started and the battery seemed to be at full charge and worked fine. I also like the way they avoid corroding the battery boxes and cables. I have had them for about 3-4 years.

Haven't heard anything bad about them other than the price!

But if it lasts, which the lead acid 6v have a bad reputation for not doing, then in the long run it evens out.

They are known for being vibration resistant, spill proof, and withstand extreme temperatures. The Optima also claims to have quite a bit higher cold cranking amps than a standard group 1 6v lead acid.

From what I hear about AGM batteries, they do not like being discharged, fast charged, or over charged, and for sure not jumped from a 12v battery!

As long as your charging system is working properly, and the cost is not prohibitive, I think they are a good investment.

I bought a Optima battery for a antique tractor because it had the highest cranking amps. The last time I got the tractor out it had been sitting for 5 years. The battery was dead so I put it on the charger. The next morning the 25 year old optima started the tractor. However the battery would go dead in 3 days. If I used the tractor every day maybe I could have kept on using it

I have a 12 volt Optima battery I put in a car I did not drive much, that was several years before I retired. A few years ago I needed a battery for my 1972 F-250 wood hauler. The battery can sit 2-3 months and still start the truck in winter temps. I would estimate the battery to be 20 + years old.

I have an 8N that will be getting a 6 volt Optima in the near future.

On my 6 volt tractors I only use the Optima batteries. The 6 volt is about $200 on-line. I can't justify the 12 volt Optima batteries, too many other good options.

Sadly, the $60 battery days are long gone. Last 6 volt cost me $92. Optima is about $240
