720 cranking engine.

When your too impatient to wait for the parts to repair the actual 720 cranking engine you bring in the super 95 cranking engine.

Back in about 61 Dad bought a 70 diesel. Had it in the shed and on New Years Day he went out to see if it would start...E SD cold as heck. Got the pony started and let it warm up and fired the big diesel up. He had bragging rights in the neighborhood.

After sitting in the shed for 7-8 months, cranked up the 820 today just to give it some exercise. Pony was a little reluctant to run which I think was from stale gas, but I got it started and ran it up the road and back and after parking it in the shed again started it without any problems. Need to get some ethanol free gas to use in the pony. Was a little surprised that the 6V battery still had a good charge (Optima battery). It is a real pain to have to pull start anything.

I recommend towing it by the frame and not the wfe however. I had one with a repaired wfe support frame. I don't know how it was broken but I never dared tow by the axle.

Dad talked about a cold snap back in the late 60's. Neither 4020 would start and the 70 started after running 2 tanks of gas through the pony motor. Then they used the 70 to pull start the 4020 with a cab. Tom

Used to be pretty common to see a hook bolted to the side of a 70 diesel. Uncle's D7 had a two speed transmission on the cranking engine. He said it was to warm the diesel on colder days. He also had a 720 diesel and I will say that the Cat cranking engine started easier then the one on the 720 and the Cat's was hand cranked. One turn with the choke, open the choke and it would start on the next time over.

If the tractor was buried up to the axles and had an equally-buried disc behind it, I would agree with you wholeheartedly.

This is up on the hard and dry, and as long as both operators have half a lick of sense, it's not a problem. A lot of stupid would have to happen to damage the front end of the tractor in this situation.

I added in the JD forum about using another tractor with a belt pulley and long flat belt to start your diesel.
