With the wide variety of experiences on here I'm guessing one of our tractor mechanics probably has done a ride along like that in a past life?

I believe that with that vintage aircraft, that the mechanics have all passed on. But maybe not and someone could explain what they are doing with the cowl open and working/adjusting somethin on the radial?? engine. Great picture by the way. Thanks for posting. gobble

Not tractors, but a highway tractor. I had a Kenworth that had a funny noise, took it to the KW shop and the mechanic said He'd ride between the cab and trailer. I said where do you want me to go, he said down the expressway. We were going down the expressway at speed then I heard him bang on the back of the cab, pulled over and he climbed in said he figured it out. I don't remember what it was now. I don't think it was a big problem. I never had that happen before or after.

I can't imagine what he may be doing, maybe looking for an oil leak. I have worked off a platform like that in the Navy, not while the engine was running. Our squadron had 12 P5M sea planes, that could only land on water. Unless they were pulled out of the water by a tug, that was the only way to access the engines. Stan

Just another couple of the "Greatest Generation" doin' what they had to do to "git er done"! Thank God we had those guys when this country needed them!

Great Picture!!

YUP, MAYBE THEY HAD PUT A NEW ONE ON...SWEET, FAITHFUL CONSOLIDATED-VULTEE AIRCRAFT CO, PBY...BE BLESSED, GRATEFUL, PREPARED...

Okay, I'll throw one out there. Chances of the props being feathered as to NOT blow the guys off their perch?
A feathered prop, running at speed, should also increase engine load at a lower RPM, no?
