Hey guys. I have a 49 model A john deere. I was trying to start it the other day on a weak battery and come to find out a crappy cable connection to the negative side of battery. I kept trying to start it like a idiot and something stuck or welded itself shut. when i turn on the ignition key the start starts spinning(Not engaging the flywheel because i don't have foot pedal pressed). Obviously normally i press the foot pedal and it engages flywheel and starts turning. didn't know if anyone has any advice. Im going to put a new end on battery cable and get a new battery, didn't know what would cause this issue. is the little silver start thingy on start welded together???? thanks. guys.

Yes the contacts inside of the start switch can in fact weld them self's up due to a weak battery. It doesn't engage also due to a weak battery since it is the battery that makes the starter spin up fast and kick the drive into the engage position

"when i turn on the ignition key the start starts spinning"

I'm pretty sure you mean to say "when I connect the battery the starter spins", as it doesn't have a starter solenoid (unless someone has added one), and the starter is activated by the foot-operated switch held to it by two little screws.

Most likely, those contacts have stuck.

The Delco part number for the switch is 820052.

I've had the best luck searching the 'net for NOS American-made units vs. the (crappy) reproduction imported parts many sellers have toady.

The contacts in the switch work with a contact stud in the starter, if that's pitted away so a new switch won't make good contact it needs to be replaced, which requires HD soldering tools and the ability to solder the new one in place.

Perhaps you are lucky and there's still an
"auto-electric" shop in your area?

Anything that requires a battery. To activate anything. Will burn, short,or destroy that item. Items like that require a good battery to operate. You can get away with it for awhile.

Whats chance i damaged the starter itself? it sounded like it was fine when i turned the key on and it spun, i can' try the new contact switch first i guess and new battery. ?

Starter is most likely still good but the contact that the switch hits could need to be cleaned up due the the damage

Take the starter off and then take the switch off the starter and get out your sandpaper and shine up the contacts. Just normal ware. Should need NO NEW PARTS. Have had to do that job on All mine 46 B, 49 B, 50 AR & 51 A.
