Got started planting soybeans

We finally got in a position where we were caught up enough with other tasks and found enough nerves to start planting them today. Some of the neighbors that don't have tobacco started earlier last week. With the cold nights and days coupled with extensive winds and rather dry conditions, I used the downtime to prepare the freed up equipment for the next phases it will go through. Sure enough the bottom fell out with a good thunderstorm after getting the first 40 acres planted.

Being this is the only row planter we have for 30 inch rows, we plant both the corn and beans with it with good results. I did however make a self contained hydraulic system to run the blower fan so I could maintain a higher, more consistent air pressure than it originally had.

We typically plant a group 5 on the good land and put group 6's on the sandy and more poor land where maybe they will have time to catch a shower of rain to make before maturity. We tried some group 4's several years ago planted kinda early on good land. Never again, as they did not even make the seed back that it took to plant them.

Its interesting to hear about what maturity farmers plant in different areas of the country. Here in northwest Iowa I plant no later than a 2.5 bean. Some guys plant 1.8.

What is the reasoning behind the rear combine tires or irrigation tires on the front of the planter tractor? More weight capacity or better steering in the sand. It looks to be just 2wd.
