JD L188X HST?

Ifin I wanted to know for sure, I would go to JD parts website or other lawn tractor parts site and look it up myself.
That way you get the right number and a price at the same time.

And if no filter is found, I sure as heck would not buy that mower.

should be a LX188 ? no external filter. And likely no drain plug either. Those transaxles are known to go bad and get slow moving when hot.

It's a Tuff Torq K61. Repairable. Fluid can be drained and refilled.
YouTube videos on repair are available.
Repair/overhaul kit is available but probably cost more than the tractor is worth.

Geo-TH,In, I have a PDF of the Deere Technical manual for that LX188, if wanted shoot me your email, mine should be open

I have it's little brother, the LX178. Bought it new in 1995, still running perfectly. Other than the 3 B's (belts, blades and batteries) the only thing I've had to fix was one carburetor, the steering drag link (wore out the Heim joints) and a set of front tires.

I have drained and replaced the fluid a couple of times, no issues at all with the hydro transmission.

If you don't have the Operator's Manual, you can download a free copy at https://techpubs.deere.com/ . Click on Equipment Publications and enter LX188 in the Model search box. There are two choices for the North American ones, based on serial number, click on the one for your serial number. Then just click on download icon at the right side of the box. With the service manual from JoeM(GA) you'll have manuals, worth over $200 if purchased as printed, for free.

If a K46 through k66 has failed The transaxle can be upgraded or swapped to the HD K66 . Can even have the optional diff lock . https://rjrtractor.com/product-category/upgrade-kits/?pwb-brand-filter=john-deere

I discovered on U-tube, there is a drain plug and I have to remove the seat to add new HST oil. Waiting on Amazon to send me a gallon of JD hst oil..

I just bought this tractor used and I want to change HST oil.
Doubt if it has ever been changed.
HST is good.

HST is good.

The K61 in our LX188 was getting soft if hills . Drained and filled with straight weight SAE 60 Amsoil synthetic motorcycle oil .
Lugs engine now climbing hills instead of slowing to a stop .

Joe,
Thanks again,
It took me a long time to download.

My internet speed is slightly faster than dial up.

It will come in handy..
Thanks again..
