Farmall H kerosene head?

Hello,
I have a Farmall H that is frozen and I have decided it is better worth my money to replace the pistons and sleeves- im set on that. I would eventually like to restore it and if its only a little more, to buy kerosene pistons, since it was originally kerosene. The engine has knuckle pistons currently. Was the head replaced with a gas head so I can no longer use lower compression flat topped pistons? Number on the block is 6685DE and I have a 36 2533-RI o top of the head, in with the valves. Let me know if anyone needs pictures to tell. I just dont know if the pistons would work with the potentially replaced gas head. I already have the kerosene manifold and aux. tank.

If you decide to Keep the head why not put in higher compression pistons and the over bore thin sleeves as well. There is really no exterior way to detect this, and it will produce better efficiency through out its life. There is no source of Distillate Fuel, and unless operated at full temperature using the manifold heat shield and radiator shutter to provide enough heat to vaporize the fuel in real field conditions under load (tillage) it will be very disappointing from oil dilution, to plug fouling to smell, it will not be happy). But if you use the flat topped pistons it will be no problem. Jim

Going to a flat top will lower the compression no matter what head it currently has. Those sleeve/piston assemblies are available right here on this site. Someone will crop up who knows whether that part number you gave is a kero head.

That was a replacement head used for gasoline H and SH. Used the same valve length as a 300 350 head and also used on those.

Didnt you previously post photos of your pistons? IIRC, didnt they have a dome? If so, those would be good pistons to use in your application. Those domed pistons will give you an extra few horses over the flat tops, even with the cheapest gas available. Somewhere, I have some NOS flat top pistons that are 40 years old, but I wouldnt recommend putting them in a fresh rebuild.

I think he has been told this ever way in the world but seems set on putting it back to use the old fuel and as you say he will be draining the oil all the time.

Now we know what head you have, thanks to D. Slater . So if you want a kero head, start running some want ads. The good news is nobody wants them, so you should be able to pick one up pretty cheap. The only limiting factor is the shipping, if its very far away. But you have all the other all-fuel stuff on the tractor, its definitely worth the effort.

On YT under H parts they list the valves in head you have . reference # 362534R1 and 362535R1 showing fits H, HV ,300 and 350 with flat top pistons. Don't know why they are listed like that. Head and valves were used with step head and fire crater pistons also. Head 362533R1 was not used on a original H. IH decided to use the latest head at the time for a replacement part on the C-152, C-164, C169 and C-175 gasoline in gasoline engines to lower amount of replacement parts handled. Head will be newer than engine you have.
