Massey 65 something broke in drive train

I dropped the clutch on my gas MF 65 while in 2nd gear on an icy hill and..,.something broke in the drive train resulting in a loud knocking. The tractor was only able to move very slowly back to the barn. Knocking starts as soon as the tractor is turned over.

Can anyone suggest what has broken in this case? I have removed the steering block as a first step and a first glance in the gearbox has not revealed anything broken there. The next move would be to separate the transmission from the engine but I'm not sure where to look for the problem. It seems that because the knocking occurs before the gears are engaged it may be on the engine side. I would be thankful for any insight other users might provide.
Heavy sigh.

I should clarify that the sound is more of a clattering noise as if something broken is banging around as the engine turns.

In gear, engine running, clutch pedal down, does it still knock? Sounds like a clutch problem.

In neutral, engine running, clutch pedal up, is it knocking? Could be a tooth off the counter shaft gear.

In neutral, engine off, jack up one rear wheel, turn and feel, is there a clunk? Broken spider gears.

The fly wheel and clutch turn with the clutch disengaged. As suggested pull the cover on the bottom and have a look. Check for the easy stuff. Just another thought if the sheet metal gets moved around the fan can just touch the shroud.

Maybe a stripped slip coupler. Take the right side cover off and
look at the shaft going into the pump.

Okay. Thanks people. It's a gas engine. Clattering is there in neutral.

My next step is to pull the pan and the plate on the clutch. My neighbor is a heavy equipment mechanic who will look into the problem with me. If the problem is not immediately visible he suggested we split the tractor and start the engine to locate the breakage.
It's a great little Massey and I'm feeling guilty at having expected it to survive what was clearly "tractor abuse".

BTW, I've been gratefully consulting threads by others over the years which have been very useful in keeping my 3 old Masseys running.
