Does anyone use proserve hay preserve

Looking at trying this stuff putting it out with the haybine I make a full swath so I need to cover all of it they say a quart to one hundred tons of dry hay but is too much harmful can someone explain how they do if they use this product

Might help us help you if you have us the name of the product.

In the past I used buffered proprionic acid. If I remember right, the rate was a pint to a 500 lb bale. It worked really well. Just dont leave any hay in the baler at the end of the day. It would corrode steel quickly. Applied it with a couple spray nozzles directly in front of the pickup.

It is a product called proserve seen where some people use it on their haybine trying to get more information

Looks like it is a Lactobacilus and lactic acid mix. Not something I have any experience with. The application rate is on gallon of product diluted with 24 gallons of water to 100 tons of hay. So 1 quart of mix to 1 ton of hay.

To apply, a spot sprayer with 3 or 4 nozzles of the back of you haybine. Biggest challenge would be figuring out how far you travel to cut 1 ton of hay. Then you can figure the application rate.

Not avaible 42 years ago and if was would not have used it. Still would not be using now if was still farming and making hay. Se no reason for it.

I can't speak as to specific formulations but hay preservative certainly was available 42 years ago. Before that time I helped a neighbor put up hay that had the proprionic acid applied at the baler pickup. It certainly did not smell pleasant.

That is what I am trying to figure out is how much and is extra safe I have heard good things about this product

Yes it was available 42 years ago. I carried a Scar on mt leg for many years from a propionic acid burn. It ate all of the paint off the inside of the baler.

At that application rate I cant see putting on extra would hurt anything besides your wallet.

Like I said earlier, making hay in a damp environment where it is hard to dry hay, preservative can be the difference between high quality feed and mulch. I would not be afraid to try the product you are looking at. Especially if you know others that have had good luck.

Most of what little is used around here is put on at the baler pickup. We tried it on some one year didn't like it. Still some setting in a barrel over to my brothers place.

We use buffered propionic acid perservative from New Holland. Use it when necessary baling hay. Tank on our baler and a moisture meter to tell us the hay moisture prior to using it. It will not rust a baler.
