??? question re fuel millage adjustments or mod s

A while ago I came across a plug in mod unit that plugs into the on board computer and is supposed to alter the on board computer system to adjust fuel consumption on [in particular] For V10 Titans. ????Does any one have information on such units and whether they in real life work>> THE reason I am asking an friend recently bought an RV with the Ford V10 Titan >> he thought the unit would give better millage than the much larger diesel pusher he traded in >> much to his dismay; it is not grand only slightly better.
>>>>>>>Does any one have any information on; or worked with; the mod unit?, and what is it and what is it called; so I may pass on any information to him.
Thank you for all your assistance.

I may be talking out of turn here because I have no idea how that contraption works or if it can possibly improve fuel mileage. I am going to say the final answer will have the word SCAM in it. Your friend should be happy at this point gasoline is quite a bit cheaper than diesel. Yoda would say ..Homework on his venture he did not do..

Agree about talking out of turn,, ,but most of those units fool the ecu by telling it the temperature is colder, or mass air flow is reading higher,, to allow more fuel, a bit more advance on the timing curve, and other methods... thus you can get 25 more hp.... BUT... How you drive is the final answer on the mpg's.... or the power... I had a towing truck that was limited in fuel, and thus smoke.... and when hauling hay (over weight) it would really let me down and not go to near the rev line in each gear, but I could shift up and it would allow it to accelerate...The plug in added just enough to make it tolerable and actually safer to get through each gear and get the fuel it needed.. Not a race car, but satisfactory... The mpg's unloaded were at best a couple of mpg, no more,, and quite frankly most of that was probably because I am a hyper-miler and use very every driving trick to keep the mpgs at their peak.. Most of my friends however had the opposite effect as they were whoa and go guys with only 2 speeds... whoa,, or wide open(go!)... And in their case, they went quicker and got less mpg with the plug in chip. While that 2002 diesel dually was rated to pull 13,500 in trailer,,, my 2013 is rated to pull 24,500 in trailer. So now even though twice a year I pull a 30k plus load of trailer and hay, it actual has plenty of power and then some. Thus, no mods needed. Inherent mpgs will have a WHOLE lot to due with the rearend gears and thus not much will change the mpgs over that. Where the 2002 had a 3.55 gear and could get 19 to 22 mpg empty, the 2013 has a 4.57 iirc so now with 48k on the clock I am finally seeing it bump to 14.7mpg on a really good day and really happy to get it. Glad to say, it only moves with a trailer on it as I have a diesel passat for my run around and its lifetime ave mpg is just now at 47.5 at 80k on the clock

Sotxbill.. Okay, I was up front so you Katy-bared me. My original thinking was this was down the lines of the thing I believe I see popping up as an advertisement on YouTube. They show some gadget to plug in your diagnostic port and it is supposed to raise your mpg and they say there is one made for almost every vehicle. This guy has a gas V10. Unless you left something out your vehicle is a diesel, or at least about halfway down your reply that is the vehicle you mentioned. Comparing tuners or programmers for a diesel vs. a gas engine is apples and oranges. I could see how minimizing ERG valve opening as B&D mentioned could help milage to some degree. BTW, glad to see you back on the forums more.

The last V10 we had at work was an F-450, and 8 mpg was great mileage for it. 10 ft flatbed with a lift gate.

What mileage is he getting and what does he hope to get with the modifications? U-Haul says figure 6 to 8 MPG fully loaded from their 20 to 26 foot moving vans, at the time those were Ford trucks ( 700s? ) with V-10 engines and automatic transmissions, around 22,000 lbs. Steady 65 to 70 MPH on flat interstates would get close to 8 MPG.

You bought the ponys, now you have to feed them. You will be chasing your tail and spending gas moeny trying to catch your tail.

Being that you are in Canada contact Wester's Garage in Tilley Alberta.
They have done custom tuning for decades.
If anyone can do it they can.
Typically they reprogram an ECM for increased performance but no reason they could not do a tune for economy.

You would think with all the MPG EPA rules we have a engine manufacturer would have every MPG squeezed out of a motor.
Yes you can turn the fuel to something and get better performance; But the only way to get better MPG is to sacrifice performance or start screwing around with the emission system.

For my pickup the only reason I added a plug in tunner was to change the shift pattern for the transmission. The torque converter locked up at 45 the I wanted it to lock up at 35. You can dial in 150 more it will not smoke the tires but it sure pulls like nothing is on the trailer. I only have had it in 150 once towing it was by mistake it did please me tho.

It has a trailer tow button if I need to lock the converter out. It likes diesel 12 mpg feed it well it will get the job done. I called the tunner and told them what I was looking for they delivered : )
