Hi everyone. Don't laugh at this, but I just noticed today, that my 1939 JD H, has no PTO. Unless I missed it somehow?? I really was never concerned about this because all I wanted was a nicely restored JD, for pulling purposes, like a small hay wagon. It was never going to be a working tractor. I guess I assumed that all tractors came with a PTO. My former 1950 Farmall had one as does my present 1951 Ford 8N. I recall growing up in farm country and I saw several implements, like a hay baler, which was being pulled by a tractor and the baler had it's own motor; power source. So I guess it didn't need the tractor to have a PTO. Just wondering when JD's came with a PTO?? Maybe it had to do with the model?? Cheaper model like my H didn't get one?? Thanks, Nicholas C.

A lot of stuff like electrical system, starter, etc were considered options in those days and farmers wanting or needing to pinch pennies would leave stuff off when purchasing. Maybe that's the reason?

You can probably add one if you want. The no pto models are sometimes called flat backs. And you are correct. They were just pulling with it and didnt need the power take off evidently. When tractors first came out some were only used for plowing. And the horses still did the other tasks.

Common to not have a PTO, especially industrial models.

Somewhere along the line the belt drive pulley was phased out in favor of the rear PTO.

Many loader/backhoe models have no PTO.

Thanks for the responses. No, I'm not going to add a PTO. It would serve no purpose for me. It's just funny I never noticed it missing until today, Nicholas C.

For the John Deere model H, the PTO was optional. Earlier models would have had 1 1/8 inch six-spline shaft and later models (1944) would have had 1 3/8 inch six spine shaft. (540 RPM clockwise direction).

Much equipment back then was ground driven or wheel clutch lift. Hydraulics on small tractors was optional. Balers and choppers and combines many times had their own engines so PTO was also an option especially as tractor HP was only in the teens. Almost bought an H with manual start and cultivators once but had no PTO, wanted to at least run the elevator with it so passed.

If hydrolics on proably came with a cultivator but then a lot were hand lift. For PTO just about only thing avaible for that horsepower tractor would have been a bar mower and very few of them at that time, mosthorse drawn used behind them. So no use so did not buy the options. Electric system mainly for lights if thought would be working at night time.

Forgot to mention, I have factory hydraulics on my tractor. Not sure exactly how they work, and that's fine. I really don't see a need for them, Nicholas C.
