I finally bought a J.D.

I bought a John Deere B serial # 270481 so accordingly it's a 50 model styled. It does have a problem tho. The clutch will not snap (cam over) into operate, but it will not move in gear so I pretty much figure the clutch is stuck. The battery is dead and we don't have it off the trailer yet to check anything much. The auctioneer said he was there Friday when they unloaded it and that was all that was wrong with it. The gas is old in it so it hasn't been ran in awhile. He didn't say that it would run and the battery is dead so he didn't lie. I bought it cheap enough that I can put some money in it and I think still make a little profit. And before anyone yells get a manual, I ordered one this morning. I'm gonna try to attach a couple photos of it.

I bought one of those back in 1972 that the engine was stuck for two hundred and fifty dollars.. Spent six years and seven thousand dollars rebuilding from one end to the other, used it for three hundred and fifty eight hours and sold it for fifteen hundred dollars.

Same as the 49 B i Had that was my favorite tractor. I had several Fords, Ferguson, Farmall and MM as well as 5 of the 2 cylinder Deeres. 38 A, 46 B, 49 B, 50 AR & 51 A.

Not a bad looking tractor. I just can not get used to a clutch lever you have to push while trying to look back for hitching and the latch for the brakes both suck.

Looks like a nice one, if you like them old green shaking right arm exercisers. ; > ) Now we will see if we can add one more name to the short list of honest auctioneers, I hope for your sake we can!

As a kid, I put a lot of seat time on the Old JD's with a hand clutch.

The hand clutch is the best reason why I don't have a JD today.

Nothing like the sound of a Johny popper.

I grew up on a 49 A and have a 41 H now.
I really like the hand clutch on those.
Easy to work on and can replace the disks in a matter of minutes.

please let us know what all you had to do to get it running,
every old tractor i get, usually cost twice as much as i think it would cost to get it going

Looks like a nice tractor if you can get things squared away on it. I own a 40B and a 50G and enjoy using and showing them! Nothing like the sound of an old 2 cylinder! Tom in Mn.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I haven't been on an A or D since I was a teenager. Plowed a lot of corn and disced quit a bit of ground with an A but those teenage years were roughly 60 years ago and I never really did any work on them back them. So I'll be asking a lot of questions since I just don't have the memory anymore, shoot, I can sometimes remember what I had for breakfast LOL
