todays project. the case 730 sat with a flat tire for a few years. they wanted 300.00 for a used rim so i said no thanks and fixed what i had. was all eaten out around valve stem. give it a patch up . and will use the other valve stem hole on the oppositte side. saved 300.00 but would have cost 400.00 to fix if i took my time into account. the longest was grinding that caked on calcium rust off.

i take rims to a commercial sandblaster. they charge me 80.00 to blast the rims. way easier than grinding and wire brushing.

that is a normal situation when when u have calcium seeping out over periods of time. calcium is very corrosive. just the way i got the tractor.

I have done that also, wore out a lot of wire wheel brush's, a lot of the wires ends up in my sleeve on my sweetshirt/jacket,and sand blasting, and with the best primer, and paint etc, rust will always win, sorry but that's been my experience!

My tractor tire shop recommends a coating of flexsteel.
I've used it to cover up ruff spots on rims..

What can it hurt??

I am in the process of repairing two rims. The rust wasn't very bad. Just that the stem hole was enlarged to one inch. That is the way they came on the tractor 25 years ago. I swapped some others onto it back then and these have been just sitting. I welded the holes up and took them to a commercial blaster. They were about $60 each to blast, although I removed the thick chunks first with the slag hammer. That took maybe fifteen minutes. When I got them back I killed the rust in the deep pits with phosphoric acid then painted the insides Rustoleum rusty metal primer. They are PA rims so I think that they are worth saving. I need more traction on this tractor so I will be reloading them.
.

I threw this contraption together to work on my Super M rims, used some old serpentine belt tensioner Pullys. I used a stiff wire cup on an angle grinder and the rim goes round and round, cuts the rust off like it's running on a lathe.

Geo, I was thinking of trying the Flexsteel, as opposed to doing it up in Bondo. How well will the Flex stand up over time? My rim is sandblasted and clean, but badly pitted. I already weld-patched around the valve stem hole.

Oh I know exactly what happened I just thought it was funny when that happened to me last year you told me you never had that problem in 50 years or something, hummm

Flexsteel can be a big help to you but it can also be a big help to the rust and insure that it has a good growth environment unless you "kill" the rust down in those pits before application.
