110 John Deere round fender

Hello all! I am new here and I have a problem with my 110 John Deere garden tractor. My dad had rigged an ammeter up on this machine but it and the starter/generator burned up. Not at the same time tho. I bought a new starter, regulator, and rewired the tractor back to what I've found in a forum to be the correct wiring diagram. My problem is when I crank the tractor, the starter stays engaged till I either get the battery disconnected or the battery dies. I thought possibly the relay was staying engaged and I had a new one so I put it on, but to no avail. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get to get this thing running again. It was my dad's and now mine and I want to keep it running. He said it was a 1965 model, but I do not know that for certain.
Thanks for any assistance I can get!!

If it's the age you say it has a combination starter-generator.

Does it continue to crank even if you disconnect the purple wire from the small solenoid stud?

If it does that would indicate a stuck/defective solenoid or a stuck cutout relay in the voltage regulator.

ASSUMING you have it wired correctly.

I cannot respond because the site says I'm using incorrect words.

I have it wired like the diagram except the red wire is wired with the Orange wire. If it were wired with the pink wire the coil would have power at all times as the red wire is hot at all times. Should the red wire at the L terminal at the regulator not have power at all times? I ask because both regulators have power there. Thanks!

I had the wiring correct. The problem is the new regulator is shorted. I installed the old regulator and it does not continue to crank. Only problem is old regulator does not charge. I bought a cheap regulator and am getting what I paid for. Person will not respond where I purchased so I just will have to get a good unit. Thanks for your assistance. It is truly appreciated!
