Looking for information

Is there a website or somewhere that lists various medium to heavy duty truck engines with torque
curves, horsepower and other info about the motor? I'm looking for info like at what RPM the
highest torque is developed for various motors. I've done some searching online, but haven't found
what I'm looking for yet.

Do you mean recently? Many MDT/HDT diesels in recent past are programmed with torque management/fuel maps to match the transmission and/or other drivetrain components.

You may have to look at the industrial version of the engine to find the maximum values on a curve.

DR, the answer is research. The selection of engines to put on the list must be prioritized as there are 5000 engines to choose from. A category of application would help so the field is narrow enough to actually be reasonable. The same engine in different years will also vary in spec. The choices are to do nothing and choose on rumor, or build a data base from scratch. Jim

Looking at diesel engines, not gasoline or propane or CNG etc. primarily looking at medium duty truck engines, mainly between 6-10 liters. The cummins 5.9 is less than 6, but can be included.

If you pick up a copy of the MOTOR heavy truck service manual from the era you are interested in it will contain the R.P.M. HP and peak torque specifications for all the major truck engines.

ONE example, ebay #264775128194, @ $21.25.

DRussell,

Do a search as suggested. Here is what came up in one search,

Look up the sales brochure for the specific models.....some of them will show the torque specs for various engines.

You know your search is over. A 5.9 Cummins 4 valve with a A pump is the winner. In a bucket truck a 5.9 will out run a 8.3 to 60.

Try the manufacturer's websites. Graphs of torque curves sounds like sales or engineering literature. Some vintage sales literature and maintenance manuals can be viewed online, others can be purchased on ebay.

If an engine was used in tractors there may be a Nebraska Tractor Test of that tractor with pull vrs RPM and torque rise data within a single gear. Keep in mind that engines are often tuned differently between agricultural and road applications.

Is this for a research/term paper or just for personal curiosity?

The 3406 Cat has a peak HP at about 1600 and peak torque at about 1200 then the curve flattens as the HP climbs and Hp drops as torque increases as RPMs drop. This is in the C15 engine and I would imagine the Mechanical models are similar. Would also imagine a slow speed engine like those old 1500RPM engines have a longer torque curve and different peak HP more near the top end of RPM.

Torque rise is a function of the injection pump design. Lots of these motors had different pumps over the years so the torque rise will be quite different.

DRussell,

Torque rise is important, but it is engine specific. Manufacturer will use it as a selling point. Once you know what engine you have, I would think the manufacturer will have that info.

I do have a list of H.P. and Torque values for a few engines, but it is old,70's, and copywrite material for class 8 engines,

Guido.
