hard starting JD MT

This is more information from a previous posting Wouldn't start today, so pulled it 5 feet and it popped right off. ?? Also it runs rough. I am not a mechanic, so what should I try to get it to run smooth?

Did you check the points gap, condition, plugs, and spark quality when cranking? Should get 1/4'' spark to ground at the plug end of each plug wire.

Poor idle and hard start can be symptoms of low compression. Try setting the valves, look everything over for broken valve springs, bent push rods while in there. Then run a compression test. Not looking for a particular number, but both need to be close to the same.

A faulty carb, or vacuum leak can cause hard starts and rough running, but save that for last. The carb can only work as well as the other components will let it. Do check the fuel for water and trash though!

New to you? 6 volt or 12 volt?

Most likely just needs the points cleaned and gapped or replaced. Also needs a fresh set of plugs. Autolite 216 works well.

Best thing you can do is get on eBay and find an original operator manual. It will show you how to do all the small repairs. A Deere Technical Manual is also a good idea along with the parts book.

Those 2 cylinder engines sound like they are running rough when not under a load. Find a video of one running and see if it sounds like yours. If the fluids, oil, transmission fluid, coolant and air cleaner look good then put it to work. Run it until it gets warmed up good then see how it sounds.

Not to be critical, but it would be easier to follow this if you had just added on to the original posting instead of starting a new thread.
