Hello all, I was wondering what everyone thought of the HD 42? I have the opportunity to buy one and I was wondering if it would be a good idea or not; the guy selling it is asking $1000 and he said it ran last summer. I don't know anything about them so any information would be appreciated, thanks.

We had one , that a hg-42 (42 inch) width accross the track . I cant see the track ,
The the tracks idles take a special grease oil fitting .
Id say buy it if there isnt any oil in radiator coolant , you will get your money if you dont like it .
Most of the one I see for 1k you cant recognize what the thunder it is.

That one looks very good.
Tracks and chain look good.
I bought one many years ago for $1000 and put a blade on it.
It won't do much pushing or clearing anything bigger than brush.
The old Hercules engine is only about 20 HP.
They were great for pulling silage wagons in wet fields.
But they are fun little machines.

Had a chance to buy a J/D 420 crawler with blade. Missed it by
one phone call, it was nice. For $1,000 Id be all over it. Dont
need one but always wanted one.

I suggest you get it. You can use it and it's a collector's item. I have a Cletrac 20 which is a neat, old machine.

If the engine turns and the undercarriage is half decent
that is not a bad price.

Just understand that an HG is a ag crawler. It it NOT a
bull dozer. The blade will work to spread dirt/gravel, push
manure, or do other light chores. It is geared fast for
much of any grade work.

The later OC3s were more of a commercial tractor and
the OC42s were better yet.

If you want a dozer go get a D-4 for a small dozer much more to work with and about twice the engine. Built a lot heavier too. For just light farm work they maybe ok. Friend of mine had an old Cletrac when we were in school. His dad traded it for something a bit newer and bigger for the muck work in the mint.

For a toy, something to tinker with? I'd say it's an ok deal.
For something you want to jump on and do work with on a dependable basis, I'd say a thousand bucks is a downpayment on a world of misery. Gerrit

I would jump on it. I had one when I was young. I always
regretted selling it. Handy and very capable machine. I
never noticed gearing being a problem.
