Hey car buffs---

My neighbor was over the other day and showed me another one of his classic cars--How many of you can name the make and model of the engine by the picture? How about the years the car could be from?---Tee

Rambler made a 327 V8 that had scalloped valve covers that resembled those too.I had one in a wagon,I would have the
hood open and people would do a double take. Some even asked why I bothered putting a 348 or a 409 in a Rambler.

(quoted from post at 15:35:55 04/18/22) Yep.....348/409. 1958 to 1965 (1965 questionable). Also big truck version with taller deck block etc.
lower motor location will help narrow year

I second that.

When my wife and I started dating, she had a '61 Impala with a 348, and that looks rather familiar.

The 348 and 409 engines had an interesting way of installing the pistons. You didn't use a regular piston ring compressor.

Most of you guys are pretty sharp! I was in the shop when the neighbor drove in so did not hear it run--Looked it all over and asked what motor-283 or 348-said nothing but opened the hood-ta-da--348-the valve covers give it away. Had a buddy that had one in high school but his was in a 58 black 4-door sedan--he could beat my Ford 352 every time. Mine was a POOCH!

Here is the car the 348 is in. Elmer is the neighbors name--nicest guy in the world-Lost his wife two years ago and is by himself-Is 78 years old still farms 450 acres-LOVES red machinery! He has more classics and likes to show them to people--Will go see him and get more pictures--THANKS---Tee

Centash, This is what I was referring to.

Many reasons.

Actually, the mystery motor was the first generation BB 427 which was to become available for NASCAR in 64 but was delayed after GM withdrew from factory sponsored racing in 63. The 63 W block 427 was the Z11.

My 58 4 door had a 348,hot shot high school kid had a 65 327 4 speed. He was poking fun at my 58,after the race he never stopped ,just kept on going! It really hurt him that I was 15.

AMC built all their own engines except for the 4 cylinder used in late Gremlins....think it was a VW design.

Ben

Oh hell no, that was a American Motors 327, same bore and stroke as the 1962 chevy 327,with a high lift cam from the factory! There was a Rebel in out community, He could beat every body on a Drag, but after about 60, a Hemi Head was gaining on him ! That 327 American Motors had 350 hp if it had a ounce.

W engine. The engine Smoky Yunick hated. He told GM it was a pile of____, and sent the engine back in pieces. That is what started development of the Mystery Motor, which became the big block.

We raced one of those 348 Chevy in Kent . We had a 56 Packard , Packard won ! Those kids eyes were wide open at the next stop light.
Wasnt that they werent ready ,they were gaming us for a couple of lights , they had the hot set up. Not really Packard rules that day .

(quoted from post at 22:38:38 04/18/22) The V-8 engines used by American Motors were built by GM.

No, they weren't. Why post inaccurate information?

Was the Studebaker 289 built by Ford?

Was the Chevy 302 built by Ford?

Sweet 1958 Chevy...Elmer sounds like a great neighbor...My wifes first car was a 59 Impala 2 door hardtop with a 348...It burnt so much gas that she then went to a 1962 Impala with a 6 cylinder and 3 on the tree.

suppose that you have figured out by now that the 427 Z-11 scalloped valve cover engine was not the 427 Mystery engine with straight valve covers.

The last of the Studebakers used Chevy engines in them.I was looking for an engine for my 55 Chevy in the mid 70's,and the guy at the junkyard sent me out back to look at a low mile Studebaker. It was a Chevy engine all right, and the valve covers were stamped Studebaker. When I sold the 55 I pulled the Stude covers off and kept them.In the mid 80's I had an AMC Concorde,it had a 4 cylinder in it,and was told it was the GM Iron Duke.I didn't have it long enough to ever work on it,and never questioned what I was told,so that could be right or wrong.

(quoted from post at 18:22:18 04/19/22) EXCCCUUUSSSEEEE me! It was Studebaker.

The GM/Chevy 283 V8 was only in the 1965/66 Studes built in Canada before closing down completely.
Only because the Studebaker foundry in Indiana, producing their own engine blocks was shutdown in 1964.
