Holt #78, built somewhere between 1900-1906. Holt Manufacturing Co. and C.L. Best Tractor Co. combined their businesses and renamed themselves as
''Caterpillar''.

As an interesting side note, # 77, the one built before this one, was converted to a prototype crawler type machine in 1904-'05 by Holt to test the feasibility of a tracked type tractor for working soft ground. The machine was a success and Holt said the tracks moved and undulated like ''...a caterpillar.''

These were rated as 40 h.p. machines.
