A few pics from recent field work

We've been busy trying to get everything planted that needs planting now. It has definitely been trying when Murphy, the dude that things work perfectly now won't allow it to work in 10 minutes, shows up. I declare he keeps bringing a bigger hammer to tear up stuff. Anyway here are a few shots.

So do they grab a plant from the round thingy... and drop it down the white tube?

Interesting pics.

I'm sure CR will add more. The white tubes are on a carousel, and it rotates to drop the plant into the ground. One person plants a row. Older planters required 2 people to plant a row.

Yes Sweetfeet. Actually you grab a fist full from the tray and separate them with a finger from the bunch, and grab 1 plant at a time with other hand to drop into the cups. If dad gets heavy footed on the foot throttle it can kinda turn into playing the whaka mole game to keep up.

We get good results from using the Perfecta field cultivators. They will leave it in good shape to plant.

Jim it's been interesting to say the least. Anywhere from what I think is the clutch suddenly going out on the 1086, to wheel bearings, to sudden hydraulic failures on the setter and planter. But we're still here to try again another day. Finally found a mechanic that will maybe take on the 1086. Supposed to meet with him tomorrow to get a plan together. I have too much going on to have to tackle it now and need the tractor back for field cultivator duty asap on top of that.

What soil type is in the last picture with the planter? It almost looks like powdered ashes of fine sand.

It is sandy loam that was re-ridged,row knocked off, and sprayed with the final herbicides before the last inch rain we had.

We have good moisture down 1.5 to 2 inches. It's getting dry though from all of the wind we have been getting. Need a good shower of rain. It's kind of dry when you have to turn on the windshield wiper to keep the dust cleared on the corn planter tractor.
