Massey Ferguson 65 choke

Why does the choke spring back? I have to hold it for a few minutes to warm up. Then when it stays running after several trys, restarts, and holding the choke, it still lopes and wants to die. Thoughts or suggestions

My experience with a 65 is it needs very little choking to start. That hasn't changed since 1966 and two engine overhauls.

Mine starts with no choke at 40 degrees. It will need choke if you try to start it with the throttle open some but I start it at idle.

It may be possible that your carb needs cleaning or there are other mechanical issues.

The return spring is needed on the choke to keep it open.

Also try adjusting the idle mix screw.

With the engine warmed up, idle it down to 450-500 RPM. Back the screw out some then turn it in to best idle. Turning it in richens the mix, it adjusts air bleed not fuel.

If the adjustment has no effect, the idle circuit may be clogged. There is an idle jet, and 2 tiny holes in the throttle bore, right where the throttle plate closes against the bore. Important those holes are clear.
