Oil/sawdust road surface

Ok - Richard mentioned using oil for dust control on rural roads. How about oil/sawdust road surfacing? In our county, oil & chip road surfacing was common, but in the county north of us they would use sawdust instead of chips. The sawdust roads were jet black and super slippery when wet.

Never seen it done with sawdust.

But the oil, about all it did was dust control. It actually made the pot holes and washboard worse!

It would cause a hard crust on top which made for deep, sharp edged holes!

Sometimes they would put a very thin layer of asphalt down, no prep, just dump and pack. Same thing, bad pot holes within a year!

Up north they sometimes use straight sawdust to keep a road frozen longer in the spring, like winter logging roads, even used to do it at a lake access. (Where you drive onto a frozen lake)

In Dolores County CO they use magnesium chloride for dust control. Problem is when it rains that stuff is slick as snot and and really ruts the roads. It also dries like concrete in your fender wells.
