cork gaskets

Still repairing the broken glass on my Dad's old level. I bought two replacement vials and a new glass from McMaster Carr. The old cork gaskets that go between the glass and the retainer are very brittle. I can probably work them into place and tack them in with some glue. They won't survive another disassembly anyway. Wondering if there is any quick and easy replacement. Outside diameter 1 5/8 inches. They are about 1 3/8 ID. The material is thin. Mics out at 1/16 inch after being compressed for 50 odd years.

Any auto pats store will have gasket material, maybe not cork. Also try a crafts store or look online at amazon and ebay for sheets of cork.

Wouldn't it be nice if the cork gasket from a sediment bowl was the right size?

You can cut smaller diameter circles out of cork with a toenail scissors. Might have to start the cut with a sharp box cutter then continue with the scissors.

Amazon has lots of listings for 1/16th cork casket material.

You'll get plenty to experiment with. I would try an Exacto knife, hold the glass down and cut around it, then find something the right size to cut around for the inside cut.

If you decide to cut your own, from out of a sheet, you'll likely be doing so by trial and error. If you run into problems trying to do it, try cutting the middle circle out first (the harder cut to make), then cutting the easier outer circle last. The outer cut of course can be simplified by pressing down on the glass, and cutting around it. If you cut the middle out last, the 1/8th inch strip your wanting will be all that's holding the gasket together, while your trying to cut it. That could be a problem.
Cutting the outside last, pressing down on the glass will hold the gasket in place, so it don't break as your cutting it.

All I am going to say to that is that if we are talking about me having to shop around and buy yet another tool that I have limited use for and do not already own...well...sign me up! I think I will look into that idea. Just no such thing as too many tools.

A man after my own heart. When I croak and Cathy has the big garage sale, there's going to be a whole lot of wtf labels on stuff. gm

exacto knife, push it down into the cork after dipping it in water. Do not slide or pull it around the line until it is mostly plunge cut all the way around. Pretend your painting a Mona Lisa not a picket fence.

Yep, He who dies with most tools wins.

why cant you use a hose clamp for the cutting it would be round and could be adjusted to the correct diameter for both the outside and the inside. With the one for the outside over the OD the inside one could cut the ID or cut the ID from the sheet first then cut the OD. Your choice.
