That is a very unusual barn for New England.Barn roofs here have very steep roofs for the snow to unload.I've never seen a brick silo either, but this is clay country that was covered with small brickyards for a couple hundred years,so some must have been built.

It's a very unusual barn all the way around. That's a tile silo. There were a couple on this road. Steel reinforcement was run around in spaces in the tiles.

sms,

That's a beautiful barn and a beautiful picture to display it. Is it possible that there is a house attached to the side of the barn? I lived in Maine for a couple years a long time ago, I saw quite a few homesteads with a house attached to a barn via an enclosed breezeway but I never saw a house directly attached to a barn.

Very interesting.

There was a beautiful big old dairy barn about 12 miles from me.It was pretty taken care of,but I can't remember any cows being in it.It had no modern day equipment in it.The Barnwood Builders TV people came and took it down. What I found interesting was that they had never seen a New England dairy barn before,it was like nothing they had ever torn down.I didn't realize just how unmolested it was until they were tearing it down.It was just the way it was built in the 1800's.I drooled over that barn since I was a kid.I always dreamed I could fill it up with old cars, tractors, and parts. It was sad to see it taken down, but if you don't have a use for it there isn't much point in maintaining an empty building. You can watch the episode on Barnwood Builders, the Deerfield N.H. dairy barn.

Those clay tile barns were common around Butler County, Pa. Some are still standing and alone. Beautiful picture, thanks for posting.

I added a link down below. It is a wedding venue now. More pictures on their website.

SMS my old neck of the woods. We stopped in there a few years ago and I think I posted some pictures of the same barn. My old farm is a Tenter site and rental under Three Whiskers farm. At least my old farm is being taken care of not like so many that the buildings are all gone.

Do you remember the old Meridale Farms barn right along route 28 on the hill into Meredith? I was disappointed when it was gone. And the other buildings on the flat, I believe that was the creamery. I should get the book.

SMS yes I do. The owner had all those barns torn down to lower his taxes. A lot of the Dreamstreet barns were burnt down and the Prospect farms in Stamford have lost a few barns.

Why don't Your state Legislatures create a mechanism that exempts these old historic barns from any property tax? the county could do the legwork and help guide the questionaire that i would think would have a dozen or more hurdles to cross in order to qualify. Namely,#1the barn is not creating any viable income to justify the tax imposed, and worse the buildings upkeep. #2 should the barn begin to experience income thru agritourism, storagelockers, ect. After 3 yrs, then it would come back on the property tax roles at 60%of original tax. The property tax discount will encourage investors and business owners to seek out and attempt to repurpose these old historic barns so that all of us could continue to enjoy them.
