Starter turns but doesn't push forward to engage

Hey all. Today when I went to start the Farmall Super A, I heard a loud whirring noise that sounded like the starter spinning, but not engaging. So I took off the starter and hooked it up to the truck and the starter gear spun, but did not push forward. How do I fix this? Thanks!

The drive just spins into the flywheel with inertia force on the spiral of the shaft.

The most common cause of it not engaging is a low battery, not enough sudden spin to throw it into the flywheel.

It could also be a weak starter, dragging bushings, internal problem.

Or cold hard grease and dirt on the spiral.

Are you sure the spring is not broken and letting the gear spin on the drive?

Thanks everyone. I took apart the starter and still cant push forward the starter drive. it doesn't look dirty, but I do not know.

Is it the original style or the newer "posi-loc" style?

If the older style, is the spring broken?

If either style, is it fastened to the starter shaft, not that the key has sheared and/or the bolt with the extended pin "tip" is loose or broken?

What wore out is asking does the drive look like the one in the 1st attachment which is the original spring style or the one in the 2nd attachment which is the updated ..posi-loc.. style? If the original style only the gear on the end will twist out compressing the fine spring. The heavy flat coil spring may also be broke. The bolts also can come loose. The updated style the gear should also twist out to engage. Something may have broke. Both should twist out and lock to drive the gear and opposite direction they should freewheel. Maybe need a pliers on it and spray down with your favorite juice to free it up.
1st original

2nd updated

Don't give in to the temptation to lubricate it with anything other than graphite powder. Oil attracts clutch dust and binds it up.
