In the field again

We got started the other day with
the tobacco ground fumigation and
getting the first part of the pre
herbicide applied. I'm always glad
to be able to get started on this
task and even more glad to finish
this task. Used to the fumigant
would be an irritant to me, but
getting where I can't see as good
once I've been around it. It still
takes half the farm to pull off this
task. Just finished the field the crew nickname the green mile on account of the looong rows. Still got a ways to go yet. Now where did my lung go
that I coughed up ??

You are right about the long rows. I had to get the magnifying glass to see the house at the other end. They make it nice though when working the crop and using the harvesters I'll bet.

Not knowing anything about this crop, i gotta ask. Fumigation? Was this always the case, say even 60 years ago? Is
tobacco hard on the ground/soils? Do you rotate this crop with others? Curious minds

Tobacco land has for a long time been fumigated to help kill any disease and pest issues that are in the soil. This and variety selection
is the only defense there is to prevent it from dying. We do rotate the crops around. We try to wait 3 years between Tobacco crops before planting it back again in the same fields. 4 plus years works even better. It has been a good rotational crop for us as there's things that go with this crop that usually are not received from others such as fertlizer blends and insect control (nematodes especially). We've had the best soybean crop from following a baccer crop.

Thats quite the operation . Is the fumigant tank pressurized? I use to enjoy a good smoke once in awhile .
