2015 Chevrolet Silverado experts

Problem with a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 4 door pickup. When you walk along side the pickup especially where the box meets the crew cab there is a distinct gas smell. It is not dripping any gasoline on the concrete when sitting. I think when the rear window is open you can get the smell as well. Just wondered if there was some common problem with these pickups that would cause this. If not where should I begin looking? Pickup hasn't been ditched. Have driven out in a few corn stalks once in a while. Pickup is suppose to have additional factory underbody protection. I have noticed that when fueling you have to run the gas nozzle on the slowest notch plus many times it kicks off anyway. Thanks for the comments.

andy,

I wouldn't know a 2015 Silverado if it bit me, but on my Fords, I know that there are two metal pipes that go from the filler spout to the gas tank. They each have a clamp on the gas tank to seal them to the filler pipes. I wonder if one of them might be loose. I think that would allow fumes to leak from the tank but no liquid leakage. Of course the vapor recovery system is designed to handle fumes, but maybe if the leak of fumes is small enough it wouldn't set a check engine indication.

Just a thought.

Definitely not an expert but there is a smallish valve/pollution control device on the top of the engine (4.8L & 5.3L) that pulls vacuum n a canister somewhere. When mine went out it threw a code which told me what was wrong. Valve thingy is in the front right quadrant if you are facing the truck. It's covered up by some other stuff but not too hard to get to. HTH

You probably need to replace fuel pump / sending unit . Common problem on GM/Chevy pickups . The pipes on top of the unit are plastic and crack .Location is where the box meets the back of the cab .

Been there and done that situation, a gas smell in that area was the mounting flange of the fuel pump unit, after a while of just a smell, it became a full fuel spill when the tank was filled...popped the pump and flange off the tank....
Good news is the box is easy to remove for access, 4 or 6 bolts/light wiring/filler pipe screws, tailgate off makes it balance better, and light enough two people can lift it off, but 4 are better for control.
hope it helps.

I've heard of this problem on those trucks.

No personal experience, but somehow liquid gas gets inside the charcoal canister, clogs it causing the slow fill, and the gas smell. One theory is it is caused by topping the tank after the fuel nozzle cuts off the first time.

Might look on Youtube or some Chevy truck forums for some more examples.

When I worked for the county parks our 2015 chev wouldn't take fuel. The nossle kept clicking off. Underwarranty. New charcoal filter because it was plugged. Happened again off warranty. $500. There is a you tube video on taking them off and hosing them out with water. When I retired it was starting to not take gas again.

Yes, had that problem on my GMC.....seems that road crap accumulates around those two pipes and rusts them off.

What year was your truck? I was going to go that way and quiz the OP about how much he drives gravel roads and if he is in the salt belt, but a 2015 is fairly new to have that issue. I suppose a lot can happen in 7 years.

My brother just cuts 3 sides of a square in the floor, bends it up.
When he has replaced the fuel pump, he bends it down again.

I had a 2005 tahoe with the same gas smell, it was 4 years old.....the fuel line from the pump had rusted through about 1/2 inch above the tank. Had to replace the fuel pump inside the tank, good times.

If no check engine light and no visual signs I would dye the fuel and use a ultraviolet light to track the leak down.

I would not associate a slow fill condition with a continuous gas Oder smell. One easy check I would do first is remove the evap vent tubes at the purge valve on the intake and check for BB's, BB's are small round charcoal pellets that look like a black BB. I would also check at the vent valve under the truck. If the charcoal canister ruptured the fight will be on its a difficult expensive job to cleanse the system of those BB's.

If you smell fuel you have a leak its not always easy to locate.
