Ford F-250 Half-Door

Suddenly the half door on my 99 F250 SD will not open. Door handle moves ok but acts like the door is locked. I use the rear doors a lot, would be great if I could open it. Other side works ok. Thanks for any suggestions. Gerrit

does it have the child lock? I'm not familiar with supercab doors but crewcab back doors have a child lock. check your owner's manual.

I think theres a lever/plunger that engages on the front door
to prevent the rear door being opened from the inside while
the front door is shut. Perhaps yours is frozen disabling the
door?

Could be a safety, could be a linkage has come loose.

Just have to get into it, get it open somehow so you can find the problem.

I think you're probably right. It's possible something has broken or come loose inside the door. I was hoping for an easy fix, would be helpful to actually get the door open to work on it. For the time being I'll use the other door until warmer weather allows me to investigate further. Gerrit

Could be a safety or child lock that
accidently got set. If so, related
info should be in the owners manuel
(location, how to use, etc.).

If door handle completely free travels
(as if nothing is attached to it,
feels different than before) than a
linkage has come apart, or something
broke.

If door has 2 handles, one inside, and
one in the front edge of (what would
be the door post to front door when
closed), try using the other handle.
This will get it open, but won't fix
it. Not sure if it has 2 handles.

And if door has been opening hard for
awhile, sometimes levers that linkages
attach to bend over time. Bend to the
point it won't trip the latch anymore.
Be kind of the same scenario as being
broke.

More than likely your cables are broken. The plastic
retainer that keeps the cable sheath stationary breaks and
the sheath moves instead of the cable.

Ford in the $200 range they are all a cheap piece of junk I would have no issue going aftermarket. You (not a fat man) can get the door panel off from the inside I would not wait till both sides are broke.

Its not a bad job once you get the door open. The upper and lower latch are all made as one. Plenty of help on youtube.

Thanks for all the help. I tried a number of things before posting on here, including trying the inside door handle for the passenger and also looking to see if there was some kind of childproof door lock.

There was no problem with opening and closing the door until suddenly it wouldn't open anymore. No warning.

It doesn't look like a terrible job squeezing in there to pop off the door panel to get to the problem. I don't have a "panel popper" but my hive tool that I use for the bees does a good job removing door panels. Thanks again, I'll check back with what I find. Gerrit

My 2000 F350 same door gets stiff in cold weather also. Quick fix: install small electric heater in cab for a couple of hours & warm to approximately 75* & you're good to go.

Thanks, but this started over a month ago and weve had warm days and cold here. Its likely something is broken inside the door, have to get in there and see what it is. Hope yours holds up and doesnt go this way. Gerrit

Red,

I'm not sure about an F250 but my Ranger has the same problem. There's no inside handle on my Ranger. Youtube has a good video and explanation of how
to replace the little cables that operate the door opener without removing the inside door panel. I bought the little kit to repair the cables but I
haven't tried fixing it yet. That's on my to do list when it warms up outside.

go to amazon, look f150 rear door cable repair kits, piece of cake, to install them. get all doors for 2 to 10 dollars, eBay has them also. u tube the installing , very easy. mark55

My Chevy had a little switch below the door handle that disabled the door latch as I recall. Black plastic on black plastic, it was difficult to see and I never used it. Your Ford may have something similar, or may even have the exact same latch handle for all we know.

Those doors were inherently childproof. No handle on the inside on the Chevy as I recall. Back seat occupants were trapped unless you let them out or they crawled over the seat. Probably one reason they went to conventional doors in 2014.

I have not done a Ranger I have a customer with a Ranger that needs repair. From what I see a range system is not combined like a F its two separate cables.

Let us know how it goes I estimated .8 tents of a hour.

I have a friend that brought a rust bucket ranger someone used expanding spray foam and sealed the rear door shut. He brought a door on the way home wrecked it. He patched it up to drive I would have junked it the day I made the mistake of buying it.

A brief update on the stuck door. I got it open after removing the door panels and figuring out which cable does what. The one with my white zip-tie actually unlatches the door. Not sure what the other one does as it looks like it's been dead for some time. I'll either go with the new parts from some online source or use it like this until it becomes a normal part of life. See photo. Thanks again for the help, Gerrit

Middle top of pix the cable mount is broke. It has a cable for the top and bottom latch.

Just hope you never have to work on the latch system on a Honda Ridgeline its a engineering marvel. It has 4 latches and a lock cylinder latch... This is my first and last. The tailgate opens normal and can be opened like a door WTF who needs dat:( Well the old gal that got it from her brother. As I got deeper it had been wrecked I worked hours getting it to time right so it would open like a DOOR... Every time I thought I had it right when you opened it like a door the WHOLE tailgate would come complete detached for the vhehical. Yes I got it working I lost may arse on it : ( Somethings the engineer should leave B...

In your case one cable not working as it should the door wont open. It has a upper and lower latch one latch malfunction will keep it from opening you will see as you dig deeper.

I think you will have to take that master latch out you will need some 3/16 (maybe a 1/4") rivets and a rivet tool. Best I remember some torx bits look at the upper are lower latch they have to come out.

After looking at the pix again I would wager 1/4". We use a special Rivet for that made out of aluminum I think its called a split rivet and takes a special/large tool to install them I will look it up. You can bolt it up I have seen the bolts loosen up.

Hahaha I hear ya, but once I installed a lift in my shop I had the mistaken impression I wouldn't have to buy any more tools!

I've gotta warn you, you are going to be sorely disappointed when you see my final repair. I'll get into a detailed discussion of the materials I chose and the techniques for achieving a door that opens and closes. And, BTW, I posted this because I wanted to open the door--I never said anything about doing the repair CORRECTLY!

The door in question is a $50 junkyard door that's been on the truck for a few years now. It's my policy not to put any more time or money into a part than what it originally cost. I don't see any new tools in the forecast--not for this door, anyway. Something else maybe, but not this.

Hopefully you'll find some humor in my door repair but I imagine you've seen a lot of "customerized" repairs come through your shop doors. Probably not much that surprises you these days.
Thanks for the help, Gerrit
