Sickle mower update David Bradly and a John Deere

I posted awhile back about fixing my David Bradly sickle mower. Just about everything was out of adjustment and the slip clutch was broken.

Ive got it all back together now and set it up the way you guys explained. So now Im just waiting for spring to see if my repairs worked!

While I was working on it the opportunity came along to pick up another mower. Since Im not very confident in my welding ability yet and parts are hard to find I decided to buy it! I had the chance to pick it up today. Its a John Deere 37 pull type.

Now hopefully one or the other will work! If you have tips or expertise with the John Deere please let me know. Im kind of excited to try them out. As always thanks for your knowledge and help!

Dad had a brand new 37 and I have one as well. Are you planning on making hay and on how many acres? If you plan to cut a good bit I would look at changing the guards to the 2 prong style used on mower-conditioners and I would put a new knife in as they are fairly cheap. Get a manual and read the settings. Make sure the break away is free to work. Tom

Tom,
Id like to make hay with it but it will be on a very small scale. 5 or 6 acres. I just ordered a book. Thanks.

We have a chain of farm supply stores called Theisens in Iowa and they list the rivit ones for $104. Many big farm supply stores will have one for a 37 as they fit lot's of Deere mowers. When I needed one for my 10 side mower I bought one of these and ground off the end rivits and rivited the 10 head back on. Tom

Keep your eyes open for a 0 footer. That extra two feet makes a bogg difference. Two 9 ft swaths raked into 1 windrow woorks well.

We delt with quite a few of the #37 JD's when they were new. We actually put calcium chloride in the tires when the JD dealership first got them in, for extra weight. The reason, the #37's drug sideways in very heavy hay. Our solution was much easier to deal with. We took the worn out pickup tires off the mowers that JD put on them and put 3 rib front tractor tires on the mowers. It stopped the dragging sideways.

Our Oliver mower tires were loaded when we got it. Had one go bad and had to replace and did not put fluid back in. In hay always had the conditioner hooked to back end of it.
