Planting corn

Hey guys - what do you think it will cost to plant an acre of corn this year based on what you have for cost today? I know for many it will be even more expensive when you finally get to plant.

I have no clue. I gamble in the stock market. Farming is a bigger gamble.

That said, I would think farmers have fuel, fertilizer, seed costs already locked in.

If I were in charge, I would make the USA country energy independent, period. Everything we do requires energy. It takes energy to make Nitrogen. Energy to dry corn, plant, harvest, transport.

I locked my costs in last fall.....fertilizer about 200 per acre, seed about 150, herbicide about 35, drying ....depends, but I figure about 100. I do all my own work, but planting, application harvesting and trucking will run over 100 per acre. So, that works out to 500 per acre.Add in another 100 per acre for unseen or unexpected costs, and as a bit of a cushion. I can book corn now for 7.50 per bushel and my yieldaverage over the years is over 175 bushels per acre. So, even if the crop is a bit below average, there is still a few bucks in it. Now, if I was renting or paying for land, the margins would be a lot thinner, with rent in this area, will be 300 per acre. These are all Canadian dollars..p>Ben

An area supplier told me last Friday that due to availability issues very little chemical was pre-sold prior to March. Also, pre-sold fertilizer was limited to what was in the shed and that is a tiny amount compared to their spring sales. However, I expect all kinds of stories that guys bought everything last fall and at prices that have not been seen for years. Also, no elevators are booking at the prices we saw last week. If they are booking the basis is incredibly wide. I also expect the docking hammer to come down HARD this fall when crops are delivered. All I know is I have been getting bad headaches just thinking about this year and all that can go wrong even though we have sky high prices for the moment. I'll have to get back to you on costs after I get home from church.

I am starting to think just putting up a perimeter fence, making some hay and grazing cattle over the place might make more sense now. All of the inputs and equipment and escalating fuel cost are sucking the fun out of farming. B even just making and selling hay looks better than putting in crops this year

This close to planting time I think commercial farmers would have their costs nailed down. Next concern might be whether delivery contracts are honored either on the buy or sell side. I have never traded commodity markets because they are whipped around so much.

Too much!
