Shop Time: Diesel Edition

Special Duramax diesel edition today. 2006 2500HD LLY with about 230K getting the head gaskets replaced. They weren't horrible yet, just starting to show a tad excess pressure, but this family takes care of their stuff. This truck is almost rust free, rockers and cab corners are great. A lot to spend on an old truck, but this truck in this condition would sell for $15-18K around here. We'll end up with about 40 hours labor in it. I'll post some more pics as I get the heads off today.

Venting coolant out the overflow in small amounts. Also, still having pressure on the system after sitting overnight, causing leaks at bad weak hose connections. That's how the headgaskets on a Duramax start. Next step of failure is spotty heater operation and blowing coolant out on the inner fender pulling grades Catching them early is key, if ran until fully blown, they can etch the block deck and need an engine.

Neighbor got one just like that . It has 128 K on it . Reason I know I saw he needed a jump with bad old battery . He told me low mileage.
Then a short time later the truck was gone more than a week .
I wonder if that the job he had to do to his ?
Ill ask .

I usually don't worry about the turbo too much. Especially on this truck, it's ran hard enough to keep the vanes clean, and the oil is changed often, way more than necessary. But like I said, they take care of their stuff.

This truck even has perfect injectors, balance rates were -1 to +1 on all 8. I rarely see that on a Duramax with these miles. They run treated fuel and change the fuel filter almost as often as the oil.

Wish we could have lifted the cab off last summer when we did those injection cups on that Ford 7.3! Reading about shop time we are even more thankful that Sprint6 was willing to help us so much with that project!!

Holy cow. I like those gm trucks but Im afraid Id have to send it to you or fly you out just to Change the air cleaner

I thought head gasket issues were only with LB7 engines. Those balance rates are incredible. I had aLB7 and after 300k miles I dumped it after it had the first injector recall, then two others and two sets of head gaskets. Also plastic water pump impeller issue, and the np transfer case problem. Money pit

4000.00$ plus parts I guess its cheaper than a new truck I think it would be down the road after that kind of repair in that small amount of miles

Not hungry Hobo, just what I like to do.
The jobs other shops won't. This one job
will add almost 20% to my shop gross for
the month.

When I get something piled up in the shop like that I cannot get away from it. It throws my schedule out of wrack. I understand "Like" I don't like the pressure it puts me in anymore.

Some OEM parts are taking awhile to get I have a 99 K2500 5.3 I have been waiting a week for a OEM water pump. Maybe someone dropped the ball I called yesterday and had to give the vin and start the order over ? that never sounds good does it.

Something I discovered on the older trucks, that molded 1/2" coolant hose that goes from the surge tank to the radiator our cost is $75 you can use #22827733 our cost $28. Its pert near the same hose and fits prefect.

I am a OEM coolant/parts/hose man I want it to fit and last another 20 years I normally don't care what OEM cost BUT $75 for a short molded 1/2" coolant hose is way out of line.

Yes I am that guy that puts all the OEM spring hose clamps back on He He...

Just one of the many reasons I just put a tongue in a GM truck and strip the cab off. Never had one that would run worth a dam. GM never did know how to make a diesel that would run and last.
