Any tricks to getting this seal in the groove halfway down the collar? Twist it in a figure 8? Pound it with a meat tenderizer? Or just get one edge in and push like hell?

Try pinching it in the middle like a figure 8 but don't twist it. Then put it down the hole and get
as much as you can in the grove. Then just work it around until you get it all in the groove.

I had to do this on irrigation pipe gaskets.

Clean everything up, be sure there are no sharp burs, push it in starting on
one side, work it around until it is fully seated.

Don't let it go in twisted or it will have to come back out.

It's pretty tough, so you can use blunt instruments to push it down. Avoid
sharp edges and picks.

Heating it and the gland in hot water will help some.

pinch it in the middle and put a zip tie around it. fold it in half at the zip tie and put it down the hole.
use a dikes to cut the zip tie.watch a video on u tube.

I have the correct tool but start in hole and with needle nose make into heart shape and will snap rite in. Open side goes to pressure.

Tool below makes it a lot easier--I've used the zip tie method without it also. Link is one vendor among many--just giving you an idea what they look like

Thanks guys!
Yes, that is the procedure they showed in the new seal kit when I used to buy them for Morris equipment cylinders. Those were some tough seals and didn't like to bend but I always got them in with that method.
