Rear main seal

Ive got a question. I received a rear main seal for my International B414 from Steiner. Im ready to put it in and it has an arrow for shaft rotation but its not the rotation that my shaft will be turning. The part number and description is right from Steiner. Has anyone ever ran into this? Ive read that there are right hand and left hand seals in the automotive world. I dont want to have a leak if it does matter and Im not so sure anyone at Steiner would know. Thanks for any help.

You need either a seal that is not directional, or a directional seal for the correct rotation. No way would I knowingly put in a rear main seal that is not correct. A lot of work to redo what you noticed prior to install.

Have you checked the breather filter on oil filler cap?
I stopped rear crank seal leaking on my dexta by using
Fuchs HDX30 in engine

I agree. It has me concerned thats why I thought Id ask. I
dont want to split this tractor again if it starts leaking.

I would think Steiner wouldnt sell a directional seal. My tractor cant be the only one that has a crank that turns this direction. Lol

I would be skeptical of that seal as well. Is the Stiener number IHS 3086, that is what they show and they say it is a replacement for the IH number 3072092R91. I would not install it unless I had an email from them saying they will pay labor to change it out of it leaks. This may be a case where you just bite the bullet and give Fiat $34, see CNHI parts link. Or the YT parent company has one for $12.99 if you want to try that, 2nd link. Personally, I would just go down to your local auto parts store with the old seal and IH number and see if they could get you one.
CHNI seal

YT seal

I agree with you on concern, but have no helpful idea. I do remember when that seller of tractor parts was a bad word and would make the post go poof though.

I am probably going to sound really stupid here but I have never heard of a directional lip seal when it comes to rotation of shaft. Why would a lip seal care what way the shaft was rotating?

Thank you all for the replies. I talked to Steiner and didn't really get any answers other than it shows a serial number break on the bd154 engine and that my engine serial number falls below the specs for this seal. Their spec says serial number 26077 and up. My engine serial number is 23512. What doesn't make sense is I'm sure they didn't change the rotation of the motor at that point. I don't see that spec mentioned on any other site that sells a rear main seal for this engine. So I'm going to call Case/IH tomorrow and see what they have to say.Definitely created a topic of discussion tonight. Lol. I really appreciate everyone's help and advice. I also posted on red power if anyone sees the same post over there. I also sent an email to Canadian Redneck to see if hes ever heard of this before.

I read that the little grooves on a directional seal are like threads on a bolt and will carry oil in one direction. So if used in the wrong direction it would try to pull oil through the seal. Its all new to me as of tonight.

Im only repeating what Ive researched tonight. I just want to know if its something Im going to be tearing back apart. Thats why Im pretty sure Ill just go buy from the dealer. I see your point though about not being on the oil side.

If the seal is marked for a rotation direction that does not match your application I would not use it. Some seals have the grooves that are big enough to see, others have tiny grooves like a fine thread that runs across the whole lip, that cannot be easily seen.

Even with OEM parts, I have seen such things get messed up, when purchasing goes looking for a new supplier and no one takes time to look at the original print for the part.

I Would find one for the correct application. I got a water pump off ebay and it was made for a reverse direction. Impeller was made differently. I actually had it bolted on , but did not run it. I started researching it and pulled it off and got a more expensive one from the dealer which matched the original one.
