Cold Weather Cattle

Our temp warmed up to 0 degrees (F) today and it was not bad in the sunshine. Cattle were happy anyway. I shot some video out in the shelter and feeding area.
Looking forward to the end of this long cold winter though.

Out With The Cattle

Nice pics Rusty!

My cattle have never known shelter, but I'm in a milder climate than you.

I like seeing tha cattle having plenty of straw. Dont like mucky yards, naturally no muck at zero Fahrenheit. I bet on nice days your cattle will lay around the feeder in the hay they waste, and bask in the sunshine. Cattle always eat what they want, and lay on the rest , lol

X2 on that. When ever I have snow or ice on the ground, I always move the feeder every time I feed a new bale of hay, just because of that reason. Hay on ground that they won't eat, is basically the same as straw bedding. Moving the feeder when empty, creates a bigger bedding area every time you move it. Of course if you get more ice and snow, you have to start over. I feed hay every couple days, so that's really not an issue.
Also, the sun shining on the hay, will melt the ice/snow underneath. That will of course freeze back up at night. So, if you have enough freeze thaw, the moisture underneath will kind of become freeze dried if the ground is not just a neglected feed yard. Maybe not in temps as cold as he stated. This effect only works in temps from about 10 to 32. But, anyways, it makes a difference if dealing with this over quit a bit of time, and minimal amounts of precipitation. Not 6 foot of snow. LOL.

Always nice to see cattle with lots of clean bedding and them being content laying in it. Nice to see your cattle doing well sir. Thank you. Kow Farmer Kurt

So true and I've gone out to check them some late nights and will see one or two laying on the hay around the feeder looking quite comfortable in temperatures I felt pretty cold in. If there is much hay on the ground I will scratch it up with a fork and carry it into the shelter where they can use it as bedding or even eat if they get hungry enough.
