Sadly, this is about the only method the drivers can do that works anymore. Seen a bus driver the other day that must of not PERSONALLY had time for this. He had kids in the isle, jumping over seats, and stuff, like he was hauling a load of monkeys. Must of needed to complete his route that day, and had his ignore button turned on. Either that, or he said the heck with it, and it's like that everyday. LOL.

Back in the day a couple of high school kids got in a fight on the bus while traveling down the road. The rather impressive sized bus driver told them to knock it off. They didnt. The driver hit the brakes hard. Everyone including the fighting boy flew forward. The drive got out of his seat and with a pi$$ off look yelled to the boys You dont want me to come back there, do you? They sat back down and everybody was quite the rest of the route.

We had a driver back in the days that if you acted up he would stop the bus and put you off. Didn't matter how far you were from school. You walked. Everyone knew to behave. It only took one time for you to learn.

When I rode the bus, the school had very few dedicated drivers, most were teachers or coaches.

A couple times the driver turned around and went back to the school and dropped off unruly students. Made us all late getting home.

One particularly gruff old coach (that I would swear I smelled alcohol on his breath), carried his paddle on the bus with him, and used it!

I remember him stopping on the side of a very busy state highway, getting the offenders off the bus, lining them up and applying the paddle. These were high school kids (thugs) so he didn't hold back.

It worked, they settled right on down!

As a former bus driver for our local school I can relate to this funny. I often stopped the bus and would say something similar. I would also point out I was paid by the hour, and would soon be on overtime (slight exagerration) and asked the kids how much they were getting paid to sit there. That usually got them to behave. When I was in school if you caused trouble on the bus you would have to come up and sit on the steps and the bigger kids would kick you or muss your hair up as they got off the bus. Real trouble makers got kicked off immediately and had to walk.

I think I was a freshman riding the bus and being a little troublesome and the driver told me to get up front and set in the seat right behind him and stay there until he told me I could move. After a couple days we started talking and as time went on we got to be REAL GOOD FRIENDS. We stayed good friends through life and his family knew we were good friends and ask me to be a paul bearer at his funeral. It's kind of funny how what was supposed to be a punishment turned into a life long friendship.

My uncle would drive more slowly when the kids got unruly. The kids said that that wasn't going to help him because he was a farmer who needs to get home and do chores. His reply was that I have three boys who can start without me. The kids figured out that getting home late was more of a problem for themselves than it was for their driver. My uncle was a very well liked guy also.

When my school bus driver opened the door for us to get on, The first thing you saw was a large wooden paddle with holes drilled into it hanging from the lever he used to open the door. It was made by the shop class. In twelve years of school, I never saw anyone act up on the school bus! Just sayin!

Our bus driver was a dairy farmer. When I commented to him one day that he must not sleep much. He said more people die in bed than anywhere else so you ought not to spend to much time there. I find that to be pretty good advice.

One of the bus drivers had a problem rider. Even the other kids hated him.
The Superintendent and the driver called in the parents for a conference.
Of course, the parents were, Oh not our little Johnny!! It's the driver and the other kids!!
The Superintendent said, Oh, by the way, we have a video we'd like to show you.
They'd installed a camera in the bus and it showed the kid be just generally obnoxious.
The end result was the kid either shaped up or was off the bus permanently.
As I recall, that kid never moved from his seat again.

My wife's aunt was a bus driver for years back in the 70s and 80s. She was always a no nonsense lady and raised three kids of her own including two boys. She had a boy in the bus that was a bit troublesome and one day, after she had had enough, she drove right by his stop, finished the route and stopped back at his house. Grabbed him by the hand walked him right up to his house and had a discussion with his mom. Never gave her any trouble again. The bus driver I had was a full time farmer as were many back in the 40s and 50s. I only remember one time he had to stop the bus, go back and physically put one of the big boys down in his seat. Like others have said, you could not get away with that today. Most of us worried about what would happen if the ol' man found out. Then there would be real trouble! LOL
