John Deere D140

This high hour 2016 John Deere D140 v2, wont spin over with the starter, unless jumped with the jump pack (sometimes it wont have the energy to turn it even with the jump pack). It sounds like it has a dead battery. The next thing Im thinking is valves might be too much. It got a new starter a year ago along with a new battery a few months ago. I can turn the motor to a certain spot by hand and it might turn enough to catch (not a guarantee). Does anyone know what the valves need to be set for or did anyone else have this problem? The machine is at 490 hours.

That # of hours is basically new. I suspect the charging system is not refilling the battery, or there is a poor connection or bad
cable in the path to the starter. If you have and are able to read a Volt Ohm Meter, let us know and we can help. There is no way
to do an analysis without that device and the skill to use it to a degree. Jim

That is a common problem with those engines.
You may need to go to the engine manufacturer's
website for the correct valve setting.

Another potential problem is the part of the compression release may be broken.
Good luck!

Your little DEERE has a Briggs and Stratton V-twin engine and valve settings are VERY critical as it's compression relief system won't work if the valve settings are too loose.

Look at the engine cooling shrouding for a tag with the B/S model number and find valve setting instructions on-line, buy a manual, or post back and hopefully someone will post back with the exact details for that specific engine.

Typically, the valves are set just after TDC when the piston has traveled a fraction of an inch (detailed in the manual) downward.

They are very correct. Likely (almost for sure) valve adjustment. My error was thinking it was beyond a lawn/garden tractor. The Briggs engines use a cam based compression release, and a weak starter. Jim

Thanks, every connection is tight and the battery is fully charged. Today, I fired it up for the 1st time in 3 months today and it turned over easy. I guess see what happens for the next startup. This has been happing for 2 years.
