IHI NX30 mini excavator morning hard start

I have been trying to help my neighbour diagnose a no start problem with his mini hoe with an Isuzu model 3ld1 diesel engine. This only occurs on the first start in the morning and requires a short sniff of ether to make it happen. Once started it will run fine and stop and start for the rest of the day with no problems. He owned the unit for 15 years without this problem before. The glow plugs seem to work as there is power to the three glow plugs.I have found the owners service manual online but not a shop maintenance manual. It almost seems like there is a drain down of fuel in the system which requires the sniff of ether to make it fire off?? Any other suggesting on what to check are welcome. Leon

Sure not good, using the starting fluid. First of all my thoughts are you cannot look at a glow plug
and say it is working. Even though you have power to it you need to test it. Several ways but just
pulling it out and putting power to it is the most sure way. If in fact they are good then your
thought on the fuel leaking back might be valid. The way to check that would be put an electric pump
right before the injection pump and power it on for several seconds before you try the cold start. I
am betting you have bad glow plugs, please post your results.

just because you have power to the glow plugs doesn't mean they are all working---either do a resistance test on them or use a thermal temp gun to see if they in fact are warming up the cylinder

it usually is recommended to not use either if you have energized the glow plugs

Fuel drain-back was going to be my first guess.
Places to look are hard/cracked fuel suction lines,
banjo bolt washers, seals on the fuel filters, whether
they be spin-on or cartridge, the hand pump and
water separator if so equipped. Get the engine
squeaky clean, any external leakage will be slight
and difficult to see , that much harder on a dirty
motor. Change the fuel filter and service the water
separator if it has one. Look at every joint that is
likely to have a rubber part in it. If it has any banjo
bolts, pull them out and look for a tiny strainer about
the size of a pencil. Knowing where this filter is may
save you trouble in the future. If it has a hand
primer pump, see that the plunger is screwed home
right when not in use. If the leak still eludes you,
buy some clear vinyl tubing and install a piece in
the return line and see if the system is making air
while the engine is running. If it has the original fuel
hose with the braid on the outside, that stuff can
look perfect from the outside but the rubber cracked
and broken on the inside.

Revisit the glow plugs.

Try disconnecting the wire and test the glow plug with an ohm meter. Should be
continuity to ground. If they check open, they are bad.

Chances are if there is fuel drain back, it would run rough until the air
purged. That it starts and runs well doesn't sound like fuel problems.

If there is white vapor when cranking it is getting fuel.

Did some body change those filters and they be like those Perkins filters with the square o-ring and put it on the top so fuel doesn't flow good. Usually will not run if that way. Line leaking fuel back some or a fuel leak in a line someplace letting air in. Even a porous hose will do that. I'm thinking I have a similar problem on the truck. If it sets for longer periods of time it has a hard time starting. If it just sets a week or so it is fine for a few weeks then the problem arises. I'm going to change out the fuel hoses from the tanks to the engine this summer.

You don't mention how well it turns over.
My Yanmar 5 ton excavator started very
hard on cold mornings. Lived with it a few
years until the starter died. Replacement
starter was gear reduction, engine turned
over much better/faster. Machine started
right up. Best thing that ever happened.
