Follow-up on the 4700 International

Thanks to all who posted about my original message, some asked questions, here is more info and my solution. The truck was originally purchased by Norfolk Southern railroad. It had railgear and a Hiab boom on it, those were long gone when I got the truck. The engine is rated at 230 Hp @ 2300 RPM. The no load high idle is about 2600 RPM, it has a Fuller 9-speed trans and 4.10 axle ratio. It does have a road speed governor set at 60 MPH. As suggested I spoke to a local diesel 'speed shop' yesterday, they weren't real interested in changing the parameters in the computer, but could add on some after market items that would override the governor. That wasn't the direction I wanted to go. Called a different IH dealer, they said they could turn the road speed governor 'off'. I have an appointment. Here's a pic of what it looked like when I purchased it, looks a little different now, aluminum wheels and things.

With a bit of a tune on it you would probably gain a mile or 1.5 mpg my one ton service truck gets 11 mpg around town on stock setting and 13.5 on the number 3 setting on the programmer and 16 on mpg on the highway . Good looking rig at that . Thinking of going that way myself

Being a 9 speed , you could add the back box on the tranny and have a 13 spd. First truck I had was a Cummins 400 with a 13 spd and 410 rear. But it had 24 rubber...80 was top end.

Good looking unit. Worked on a lot of them at the IH dealer I was at for 11 1/2 years. Here's a maintenance tip-keep the fuel filter/filters changed, making sure you of no water in the fuel. Water in the injectors can blow/split the tips, leading to costly repairs. Also, keep the coolant chemicals at the right numbers. The DT466E engine is a good one.

Don't see much registered in NY which looks that nice! If I remember correctly, my truck rear is 3.55, goes maybe 75 wide open on 11R22.5 tires.

Nice looking Truck! Enjoy it, dealers can be a pain. The 4:10 gears are slow Consider changing them for some other maybe 3.55.

IF he goes to the rear section he has to shorten the drive shaft about 4 inches . I think it is actually 3.75 inches for it. Or he could see about just putting 24.5 on it and be less work and may not cost anymore than all the rest of it. Like I said in the other post about it. It may have dip switches in the back of the speedo to adjust for the tire or rear gear settings.
