two weeks after the freeze

It's been a year since last year's deep freeze. The citrus was hurt, mostly the branches. Some plots have started to blossom. No fruit was produced for this year's crop.
Appears some farmers determined their trees were too far damaged to be recovered. Thousands of acres in my area have been pushed out.
Many plots though are being retained. Workers have gone in and trimmed off the dried branches. The main trunks are unhurt. Green branches are leafing out. Be another year though for fruit.
The trees across the road from my place were similarly affected. I was hoping they could be saved. A whole section just in my neighborhood got pushed out.
My best hope is they will be replanted with a newer variety. My worst fear is he will subdivide and sell lots.

There is a place south of us we haul young trees for.
From the size of his operation I would say he makes a good percentage of his income selling young trees as apposed to oranges.
He ships all over zone 8 and even into zone 7.
I questioned him about it once and he stated he uses a cold hardy root stock that helps protect the tree from colder weather.
I did not push the subject.

I know about the cold hardy root stock; and know it helps some; but I suspect many people are buying trees that will never make it through the first winter based on a marketing ploy that the trees are better suited for cold weather than regular orange trees.

Southern Ray. I had 6 each satsuma orange and lemon trees. Lost them all for that freeze. No plans now to replant. Ill put my money and time some place else. Wingnut

I had no idea the freeze reached that far South. Edinburg Tx lie's farther South than Orlando, about parallel with Ft Myers FL.
