4020 load sensing shaft leak

Good evening,
I have a 1969 4020 synchro diesel side hydraulic controls. Parked in our shop last night and this morning there was a puddle of hydraulic oil underneath it. Found its coming from the load sensing shaft on both sides. What all would I need part wise? I assume some sort of O ring and bushing? Is it a very difficult job? Id appreciate tips, tricks, advice. Thanks!

Its an easy job . John Deere has the updated bushings with the orings in them Replace the load shaft while youre at it . Drain the oil put a Jack under the wishbone drive the shaft out let the wishbone down pry old seals out drive the old bushings out put the bushings and seals in then lift the wishbone back up check for side to side play in the wishbone if there is any shim it tight with machinery bushings and youre done

You can use the old shaft if your careful . I made a tool which is just a piece of three eighths hardened rod i ground a notch in . Just make sure that you are bearing on the bushing not the housing

I'll add if L/D control lever under seat isn't in "D" then place lever in "D'' before removing shaft. Also while oil is drained would be an excellent time to check/clean trans oil suction screen if screen hasn't been checked recently. While reinstalling shaft utilize shim washers between drawbar support & trans case so as to remove side to side motion of drawbar support.

Sv knows more on these 3020s than I do but I have done this on 2 of my 3020s. The first time I used deere parts. It may have been something I did but it started leaking again in a year . Someone on this board told me about Boling Machine Shop. [I hope I spelled that right] I couldnt tell any difference in the shafts but the bushings from Boling seemed to be better quality than deere. The first ones have been in now for 8 years or so and still no leaks. I have been told deere updated theirs. I would replace the shaft because I like to do a job once and not have to do it again for a while. The last time I bought them Bolings parts even came with instructions.Good luck ! Lee

I am doing the same job on my 69 4020 and item 20 does not fit in mine. It uses item 24 which is a smaller bushing with o-
ring. The outer bushing in mine also has a groove with an o-ring and smooth flat ring on top of that. An old mechanic at
dealership says he has never seen one like it and I can t find replacement bushings or the seals to rebuild it. Has anyone
ever seen something like this?? Looks like I am going to have to use the seal number 23 which is the original seal when new.
Deere did have the updated bushing with o-ring. That bushing is tapered on the inside and is suppossed to go in one way. I
think my old ones were in backwards with the taper to the outside. Which way should the go in???

I just got back from the JD dealer and apparently someone in the past machined a bushing the thickness of the old seal and
grooved it to accept the o-ring and seal from the bushing from above 250000. I got those new seals from JD and am going to
install them in my old bushings.

I used a long 5/8 rod jacked one wheel up rod goes thru hole in wheel and you can feel ledge with rod. 3 of us that had did it before changed shaft and seals in less than 30 min. Used newer and better seals. Got them from JzD but might have come from somewhere else.

The oem bushings for a 3020 dont have the oring . The oem bushings for my 67 4020 do have the o ring

JD 4020's below serial # 250,000 came from factory with a seal outside of bushings ""no OEM seal inside bushing was available"". I served as a JD dealer service manager from '74-'87.

When order bushings for my 4020 which is a 67 cant
remember the serial number but the bushings have an oring
in them . The 3020 doesnt have the oring without going
through boiling

I knew that . They still dont on a 3020 oem . So after 250
they came up with it I get what your trying to tell me know
